FedEx official to speak at Athena Award dinner

YOUNGSTOWN — Virginia C. Albanese, president and chief executive of FedEx Custom Critical, will provide the keynote address at the Athena Award dinner May 22 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman.

The dinner, co-sponsored by the Regional Chamber and The Vindicator/vindy.com, recognizes area business and professional women. Thirty-three women have been nominated.

Besides leading North America’s largest critical-shipment carrier, Albanese serves as the vice president of operations for the Akron Zoo board and is a board member for The Boys and Girls Club of Summit and Portage Counties.

Library business center offers training sessions

YOUNGSTOWN — The Business and Investment Center at the Public Library of Youngstown Mahoning County is offering a free series of training sessions in May. The sessions are designed to teach people how the library’s collection of databases can help a business.

Representatives from several database publishers will give overviews of the following resources: ReferenceUSA, May 5; Demographics Now Library Edition and Business Company Resource Center, May 15; and Dun Bradstreet Million Dollar Database, May 19. All sessions will be 6:30-8 p.m. at Main Library, 305 Wick Ave. Registration for each of the programs is required by calling (330) 744-8636 and pressing “2” at the prompt.

Workers’ Comp official will speak at luncheon

BOARDMAN — Marsha P. Ryan, Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation administrator, will speak at the annual awards luncheon of the Mahoning Valley Safety Council. It will be at 11:30 a.m. May 7 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman.

The council also will honor local companies with outstanding safety records and announce the recipient of the 2008 Joan Kovach Safety Leadership Award.

The cost is $20 for Regional Chamber members and $25 for others. Reservations must be made by May 1 by calling (330) 744-2131, ext. 12.

Owners open Tapazza, new eatery in Boardman

BOARDMAN — Lorenzo Scordo and others have opened Tapazza, a new restaurant at 4150 Market St. The restaurant features stone-fired, Italian-style pizzas and tapas, which are similar to appetizers. Scordo said tapas are small dishes that are meant to be shared among groups of people.

“Tapazza was created to have a more fun, social dining experience,” he said.

The restaurant’s thin-crust pizzas have toppings that include roasted chicken, smoked mozzarella, eggplant, artichokes and roasted red peppers.

Advanced Manufacturing plans quarterly meeting

WARREN — The Advanced Manufacturing Initiative will host its spring quarterly meeting at 7:30 a.m. May 6 at Thomas Steel Strip.

Company officials will show how they are improving its bottom line through new product development while improving energy efficiency and environmental operations.
