Palumbo pitches Poland to victory
LaGRANGE — Jordan Palumbo tossed a five-hitter with three strikeouts Saturday to lead the Poland High softball team to a 4-2 win over Strongsville in the Keystone Tournament.
Palumbo also had three singles and two RBIs while Allie Patton doubled and singled.
Nikki Peskura had two hits for Strongsville.
Hudson 12, Poland 5
LaGRANGE — Jenna Barnhart had two hits and three RBIs whie Patton added two hits, two runs and two RBIs for the Bulldogs (11-6). Poland committed seven errors in falling to the defending Division I state champions. Nine of the runs given up by pitcher Liz Maher (4-5) were unearned.
Katey McCandless had three hits for Hudson.
Canfield 5, Nordonia 0
LaGRANGE — Lauren Sulick pitched a no-hitter for the Cardinals (12-3-1) at the Prebis Memorial Tournament.
Rebecca Brown and Melanie West had two hits each. Melissa West doubled.
The Cardinals went 2-1-1 in the tournament, defeating Hudson (5-0) and tying Strongsville (1-1) on Friday. The Cardinals lost a 10-inning contest to North Canton Hoover on Saturday.
North Allegheny 3, Ursuline 2
HOWLAND — Miranda Carkiko’s three hits included an RBI single in the first inning and a double in the fourth when she scored the Irish’s other run on Casey Lower’s hit.
Anna Donko had two hits for Ursuline.
Ursuline 13, Cincinnati Ursuline 3
HOWLAND — Carkido’s grand slam ended the game. She finished with five RBIs for the Irish (12-4).
Nikka Bonamase and Donko each had four hits, with Bonamase hitting two doubles. Rebecca Hartz tripled and Jessica Yarab doubled.
For Cincinnati Ursuline (9-8), Alex Bren doubled.
Howland 9, Cincinnati Ursuline 3
HOWLAND — Winning pitcher Abby Nicholas struck out 10 batters. Katie Peoples had three hits while Amanda Delaquila drove in three runs. Amanda Toth doubled and Tiffany Jaques drove home two runs.
North Allegheny 5, Howland 1
HOWLAND — Peoples, Rachel Bixler, Delaquila and Jenna Diebec each doubled for the Tigers.
Field 4-12, Mooney 1-10
MOGADORE — Emily Plum’s two-run hit broke open a pitcher’s duel in the sixth inning of the first game. Kristen Stahl had two hits for Mooney.
In the second game, a five-run seventh inning finally gave Field the lift it needed.
Katie Hughes had three hits for the Cardinals while Christina Hrehor and Meghan Williams knocked in two runs apiece.
Vickie Farris tripled for Mooney.
Western Reserve 17, Southern 0
SALINEVILLE — Heather Monoski hammered a grand slam and triple and finished with five RBIs, while Kailyn Mowery rapped a triple and double, and drove in four runs to lead Western Reserve, which drilled 20 hits.
Starter Brittany Boyer and reliever Ashley Grim combined to pitch a one-hitter for the Blue Devils (8-7, 7-2 ITCL Tier Two), Boyer striking out seven.
Chelsea Korda socked a two-run homer and two singles to reinforce Western Reserve.
Presley Cummings had two singles for Southern.
Girard 4-8, Warren Harding 1-2
GIRARD — Lisa Holmes pitched both victories for Girard (6-10) over the distance on four- and five-hitters, respectively. Holmes is 4-3.
Emily Smerchansky slammed a three-run triple to key Girard’s 4-1 win.
Chelsea Guerrieri had a double, two singles and two RBIs to pace the Indians’ second victory.
Mathews 5-0, Crestview 2-5
COLUMBIANA — Freshman Jenna Whitfield had three hits, including a two-run double in the top of the eighth inning to push across the go-ahead runs.
Whitfield’s double scored freshman Jen Tillery and Audrey Dodgson.
Mathews won despite being outhit, 10-5.
In the Rebels’ win, Crestview (7-9) scored twice in each of the first two innings.
Julie Wyse, Tilly Dickerson and Jen Tillery had a hit for the Mustangs (5-10).
Southeast 14-13, Newton Falls 0-1
NEWTON FALLS — Winning pitcher Shannon Hamilton (9-0) had three hits including a homer and double to drive in four runs.
Danielle Kaley also homered and doubled for two RBIs while Trisha Williams and Alyssa Biltz each had three hits. Williams drove in five runs.
For the Tigers, Blaine Chapman, Ashley Walker and Breona Ginter singled.
In the second game, Lindsay Spaidel had four hits and four RBIs for the Pirates (13-2).
