Area clubs receive awards at state convention in Dayton


DAYTON — Singled out for recognition at a convention held by the Garden Club of Ohio in Dayton were Nature Lovers Garden Club of Youngstown and East Liverpool Calcutta Area Garden Club.

Nature Lovers was the recipient of three awards:

UBest Standard Show in a public building — third place.

UMost Distinctive Staging of a Standard Flower Show — third place and a flower show certificate of recognition for first flower show presented.

UCivic Beautification — second place, for a garden created at the Veterans Administration Clinic on Belmont Avenue.

East Liverpool/Calcutta won two awards:

UGarden Therapy Service — first place.

UGarden Club Youth — second place.

Individuals receiving winning ribbons at the GCO flower show were:

UDesign category — Pearl Marlos, first place, and Anne Ellis, Millie Campana and Sheila Bowman, second place.

UHorticulture category — Beverly Patrick, first place and the Arboreal Award, and Dianna Mullins, first place and the Horticulture Excellence Award.

Nature Lovers has also been awarded a $200 grant from the Principal Financial Group Civic Development Grant Program, “Let's Go Native,” to be used for further development at the Blue Star Marker Garden at the VA Clinic. The grant was established by the National Garden Clubs Inc. to boost civic development across the nation and the use of native plants.
