Stanford hires Johnny Dawkins
SAN FRANCISCO — Johnny Dawkins, a longtime assistant coach at Duke, has been hired as Stanford’s new men’s basketball coach.
Dawkins replaces Pac-10 Coach of the Year Trent Johnson, who left for LSU earlier this month, two people close to the situation said Saturday. Both people requested anonymity because Stanford had not made an official announcement, which could come as soon as Monday.
The 44-year-old Dawkins was an All-American at Duke and has been on the coaching staff there since 1998.
Stanford reached the regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2001, losing to Texas. The Cardinal face the loss of Brook and Robin Lopez, who both declared themselves eligible for the NBA draft.

Scott leads field
IRVING, Texas — Adam Scott again topped the leaderboard at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship. His solid finish Saturday, and Kevin Sutherland’s bad one, made sure that happened.
Scott, at No. 10 in the world the highest-ranked player in the field, overcame two front-nine bogeys and shot a 3-under 67 Saturday to get to 8-under 202. The Australian star birdied two of the last three holes, including a 31‚Ñ2-footer at the 429-yard 18th.
That put him three strokes ahead of a quartet of players — Sutherland (67), Bart Bryant (67), Charley Hoffman (68) and Ryan Moore (68).
Sorenstam in front
AVENTURA, Fla. — Annika Sorenstam shot a 1-under 70 to take a one-shot lead over Paula Creamer after three rounds of the Stanford International Pro-Am.
Sorenstam, seeking her 71st LPGA Tour victory, has won five straight events when she’s taken a one-shot lead into the final round.
She chipped in for birdie on the second hole, then made 12 consecutive pars before a bogey at the par-3 15th. Her putter finally cooperated at 17.
Legends
SAVANNAH, Ga. — No wonder Tom Watson and Andy North campaigned so hard for a return to team play in the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf. They’re very good at it.
Watson and North combined for a better-ball 62 at The Club at Savannah Harbor for a 23-under 121 total and a four-stroke lead heading into the final round.
Brad Bryant and Lonnie Nielsen (60) were tied for second with Jeff Sluman and Craig Stadler (63). Bernhard Langer and David Edwards (61) were five strokes back on the island course in the middle of the Savannah River.

Erdei outpoints Abron
DRESDEN, Germany — Undefeated Zsolt Erdei pounded out a one-sided decision against DeAndrey Abron on Saturday night to retain his WBO light heavyweight title.
Erdei (29-0, 17 KOs) landed his left jab from the start in his 10th defense, proving too quick and experienced for the American, who had yet to fight a name opponent.
All three judges scored the bout 119-109 for Erdei. Despite some combinations from the Hungarian that appeared to stun Abron in the final minute of bout, the fight largely was devoid of compelling exchanges and drew jeers from the crowd.
