Slain patrolman to be honored at Masses

YOUNGSTOWN — Five years ago, on April 29, 2003, Patrolman Michael T. Hartzell, 26, was shot to death in his cruiser by a man who later hanged himself in an Ohio death row prison cell. Hartzell, an Austintown native, will be remembered at an anniversary Mass at 4 p.m. today at St. Christine Church and at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Church.

Green Team plans drive

BOARDMAN — The Mahoning County Reuse Recycling Division, better known as The Green Team, has a residential electronics recycling drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the township administration building, 8299 Market St.

Mahoning County residents and small businesses can bring up to 10 electronic devices to the site. Electronics include computers, monitors, printers, cell phones, DVD and VCR units, keyboards, mice and stereos.

Table-top copiers and personal fax machines will be accepted, but no floor models of those devices.

Televisions will be collected for a fee of $10 for each set under 21 inches; $15 for sets 21 to 31 inches; and $30 for televisions beyond 31 inches. Fees are payable to the vendor on a cash-only basis.

Symposium on cars set

YOUNGSTOWN — “The Automobile in Our Culture,” a symposium exploring the past, present and future of America’s love affair with the automobile, will be from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at Youngstown State University’s Kilcawley Center.

Weather permitting, there will be a classic car show on the campus core from 3 to 7 p.m. featuring 40 vehicles spanning the decades.

The symposium, part of YSU’s Centennial Celebration, is expected to attract more than 200 car enthusiasts and experts from across the nation. The event features national, regional and local speakers and scholars on a variety of topics, including the influence of GM Lordstown on the Mahoning Valley, the story of the Avanti and much more.

At 7 p.m., Martin Apfel, executive director of global manufacturing and planning for General Motors, will give the keynote address.

K of C Auxiliary plans dinner, May crowning

GIRARD — Girard Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary will have its Mother/Family Dinner at 6 p.m. next Saturday in the K of C Hall, 122 S. State St. There will be a May crowning and a Mother of the Year will be honored. Angie Barrecca is chairwoman for the event. Reservations are due by Monday.
