Schiraldi throws 2-hit, 4-0 victory in TAC matchup


Tim Schiraldi also posted eight strikeouts as Hubbard registered its 13th win.

HUBBARD — Tim Schiraldi pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead Hubbard past LaBrae 4-0 in Friday’s Trumbull Athletic Conference baseball game.

Leading 1-0, Hubbard (13-4, 9-1) scored three runs in the second inning as Frank Palestro singled and Dan Helsel reached base on an error. Both moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Todd Gasior. Steve Zubyk singled them home and he scored on a double by Marc Kanetsky. Bo Slemons hit a triple and single for the Eagles.

Girard 7, Newton Falls 0

NEWTON FALLS — Senior Anthony Guerrieri’s three-run home run in the third inning helped fuel the offense for Girard (11-8, 8-3 TAC).

Senior Nick DeVore added a double for the Indians.

Senior starter Cory Stevens (4-0) allowed five hits over six innings before senior Kris Brown appeared in the seventh to induce two flyouts before striking out the last Newton Falls batter.

Tyler Kernen had two singles for the Tigers.

Lakeview 6, Liberty 5

CORTLAND — Ryan Nisbett’s single in the last of the seventh inning drove in Kevin Monti, who led off the inning with a single, with the winning run for Lakeview.

Scott Palette slugged a two-run homer and single while Michael Pasternak had two singles to aid Lakeview (8-8, 7-4 TAC).

David Szakacs had two singles and two RBIs while Justin Machamer had three singles to lead Liberty (0-10, 0-9 TAC).

Josh Pryor got the mound win in relief.

South Range 20, Chaney 2

YOUNGSTOWN — Senior Steve Bensinger had a home run, triple and single for eight RBIs for South Range (4-8).

Senior Joel Melnick and junior Chris Gause both had two hits including a double, sophomore Vince Miller had two singles and junior Don DeChellis had two hits and three RBIs for the Raiders.

Dustin Guyer had two singles, while Joe Balog and Tyler Lillo had a single apiece for Chaney (4-11).

Canfield 12, Campbell 1

CAMPBELL — The Cardinals (8-0), who are in first place in the MAC standings, scored four runs in the first inning, two in the second and six in the third in cruising to their 13th win in 15 starts. Jared Turocy hit a home run, two singles, scored three times, stole a base and drove in three runs. Mark Carrocce hit two singles, scored twice and drove in three runs. John Manzoian hit two singles, stole a base and scored twice. Kyle Vaclav’s single and sacrifice fly brought in three runs. Tom Cheslik hit a pair of singles. Campbell slipped to 10-4.

Howland 20, West Geauga 7

HOWLAND — The Tigers (8-7) had 12 players bat in the second inning and scored seven runs. Howland also had 12 players bat in the third inning and score eight times.

Winning pitcher Andy Zigmont (4-0) scored twice and drove in three runs. Vince Villio hit a double, two singles, scored twice and drove in two runs. Matt Preston hit a triple, two singles, scored three times and drove in three runs. Adam Shrodek hit a pair of singles and drove in two runs. Alex Pert hit three singles and drove in a run for West Geauga (2-9).

Salem 6, Niles 0

Bobby Spaulding pitched six shutout innings, striking out six and walking two, and David Wright pitched a perfect inning of relief to lead the Quakers. Zach O’Brien had two hits, a run and an RBI for Salem, while Brandon Holland and Wright each added two hits and scored a run.

Mike Kelly had two hits for Niles.

Lowellville 8,United 4

STRUTHERS — Mike Demetro had a double, two singles and three RBIs while Dante Abbas added a triple, double and two RBIs and Vince Travaline had a triple, single and two RBIs to pace Lowellville at Cene Park Thursday.

Drew Skelley contributed a double and single for the Rockets (12-2). Starter Dante Abbas got the mound win. He is 3-1.

Jimmy Phillis had a double and single and his brother, Ryan Phillis, had two singles to lead United (9-5).

Mathews 10, Bristol 0

VIENNA —Sophomore Cris Morgan had six strikeouts and one walk during a two-hitter in his first varsity start.

Collin Bowser, Phil Ciprian, John Scudier and Rick Sommers had two hits apiece in the 41‚Ñ2-inning game.

Sommers drove in four runs, while Ciprian and Kyle Davis had two RBIs apiece for Mathews (10-3-1, 6-2 NAC).

For Bristol (1-10, 1-8 NAC), Greg Pankuch doubled and Jacob Sloan singled for the only other hit.

Late

STRUTHERS — In two recent games, Struthers posted a 15-5 victory over Lakeview and the Wildcats turned back Howland 6-4.

L.J. Schromofsky and Tyler Serich of the Wildcats each had three hits in the win over the Bulldogs. Mike Vitucci collected two hits.

In the victory over Howland, Struthers (9-8) built a 5-0 lead in the first two innings and the Tigers couldn’t recover.
