Rachel Pico fans 21 in no-hitter


JFK won, 1-0, in the eighth when J.K. Kolovich singled home Morgan Piacquadio.

WARREN — Warren JFK pitcher Rachel Pico struck out a career-high 21 batters over eight innings and pitched her first no-hitter as the Eagles outlasted Jackson-Milton 1-0 in a softball game on Friday.

JFK got its run in the bottom of the eighth when Morgan Piacquadio walked and later scored on a single by J.K. Kolovich.

Lindsey Knipp struck out 12 and walked three, tossing a three-hitter for Jackson-Milton.

McDonald 10, Warren Harding 2

McDONALD — Kaitlin Rutushin moved within four strikeouts of breaking the school’s single-season record to lead McDonald in a non-league game.

Rutushin, who gave up two unearned runs and one walk, struck out 12 Raiders and now has 184 on the season. Tracy Logar holds the record of 187, set in 1999.

Rutushin also had five hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs for the Blue Devils (14-0). Sara Sylvester added three hits, while Jessica Ferraro and Andrea Robinson each had two.

Howland 2, Fitch 0

AUSTINTOWN — Melanie Cope (7-4) pitched a four-hit shutout with five strikeouts and no walks and Rachel Bixler added two singles for the Tigers (8-9).

Sam Kozbial doubled and singled for Fitch (7-6) and Emily Purnell struck out nine.

Uniontown Lake 3, Poland 2

LaGRANGE — Poland batters struck out 14 times, but the Bulldogs managed three hits, led by senior Liz Maher’s home run.

Hitting singles for Poland in the Keystone tournament were senior Jenna Barnhart and freshman Adrianna Sikora.

Akron Hoban 4, Poland 0

LaGRANGE — Maher’s single in the seventh inning was the lone hit for the Bulldogs (10-5).

Two errors led to Hoban’s three unearned runs in the fifth inning.

Niles 9, Salem 6

SALEM — Aubrey Hale struck out seven to get the win and also drove in two runs, while Brooke Joseph and Melyssa Spowart each had two hits for Niles (6-9, 3-4 MAC).

Bridget Szbat had two hits for Salem.

Crestview 11, Lowellville 3

COLUMBIANA — JoLee McCoy had three singles and an RBI and three stolen bases for Crestview.

Also for an RBI for the Rebels, Kelly Peppel had two doubles and an RBI and Jen Hogue had a double and single.

Cori Pavlicko had three singles and two RBIs, Kayla Maszczak had a double and single, Lena Notareschi had an RBI single and Stephanie Gruber doubled for the Rockets.

Pavlicko struck out seven.

Hubbard 12, LaBrae 1

LEAVITTSBURG — Gabby Flynn belted a solo homer, double and single and had three RBIs, and she also gained the mound win in relief, to pace Hubbard. Flynn is 4-4.

Ashley Bone added a double, single and three RBIs and Kara Egalsky had two doubles and two RBIs to also lead Hubbard (11-5, 8-1 TAC), which rapped 15 hits.

LaBrae fell to 4-11 and 2-8 TAC.

Lakeview 7, Liberty 0

LIBERTY — Abbey Bensing pitched her second no-hitter of the week, striking out five without walking a batter, to lead Lakeview.

Bensing faced the minimum, doubling up Liberty’s only baserunner after she reached on an error.

Jessica Downs and Bensing each had three hits, while Mackenzie Palette, Joanna Novotny, Taylor Butler and Brittany Ayres each had two for the Bulldogs (11-3, 9-2).

Alison House struck out six for the Leopards.

Girard 4, Newton Falls 2

GIRARD — Kristen Helle had two hits and one RBI for Girard (4-11, 2-9 TAC) at Tod Park.

Helle also helped the Indians’ defense strand nine Newton Falls runners as the senior center fielder made five catches at crucial times.

Ashley Isoldi, Megan McCale, Chelsea Guerrieri, Emily Smerchansky, Lisa Holmes and Nikki Hollenbaugh added a single apiece for Girard.

The hits by Isoldi, Smerchansky and Holmes each knocked in one run.

Jessica Connell had a run-scoring triple in the fifth and added two singles for Newton Falls (7-8, 7-4 TAC).

Also for the Tigers, Makayla Crouser had two hits.

Mathews 11, Bristol 0

VIENNA — Freshman Brittany Schnarrs had a six-inning one-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks.

Freshman Julie Wyse and sophomore Steph Durig had three hits apiece, while juniors Audrey Dodgson and Miranda Tatum had a pair of hits for Mathews (4-9, 3-6 NAC).

Wyse and Durig each accounted for two RBIs.

Lindsey Keller had the lone hit for Bristol.
