AMERICAN LEAGUE

Angels 4, Tigers 3

DETROIT — Vladimir Guerrero homered to highlight a four-run fourth inning and the Los Angeles Angels held off Detroit, ending the Tigers’ four-game winning streak. The Tigers were coming off a three-game sweep of Texas in which they scored 37 runs, but didn’t have nearly as much success against Ervin Santana (4-0). Santana pitched 61‚Ñ3 innings, allowing three runs and six hits. Justin Speier escaped jams in the seventh and eighth innings, and Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his 10th save in 11 tries. Santana and Tigers starter Nate Robertson (0-3) cruised through the first three innings before running into trouble in the fourth. Chone Figgins led off the Angels’ half with a double and Guerrero made it 2-0 with his third home run. Torii Hunter followed with a double and Los Angeles loaded the bases with a single and a walk before Casey Kotchman hit a two-run single. Curtis Granderson led off the bottom half with his second homer of the season, and Magglio Ordonez hit an RBI single later in the inning. The Tigers closed to 4-3 in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Miguel Cabrera beat out what would have been an inning-ending double play to drive in a run. Detroit loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh and Speier retired Gary Sheffield on a liner to the warning track in left-center field. The Tigers put two runners on base in the eighth and Speier got Ivan Rodriguez on a lineout to Kotchman at first base.

Rays 5, Red Sox 4, 11 innings

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Nathan Haynes singled with no outs in the 11th inning, driving in Carl Crawford from second base to lift Tampa Bay. Haynes lined an 0-1 pitch from Mike Timlin (2-2) to right field after Crawford, who was 3-for-6 and scored three runs, began the inning rally with a single and stole second. Timlin walked B.J. Upton before giving up the game-winning hit. The Red Sox stranded the potential go-ahead run in scoring position in the ninth, 10th and 11th inning. Scott Dohmann (1-0) got David Ortiz — the only batter he faced — to ground into an inning-ending double play with men at first and third in the top of the 11th.

Rangers 6, Twins 5, 10 innings

ARLINGTON, Texas — David Murphy hit a 10th-inning RBI single and Texas snapped a seven-game losing streak. Hank Blalock hit a one-out double against pitcher Juan Rincon. With two outs, Murphy hit a fly ball to the warning track in left-center field to drive in pinch-runner German Duran with the winning run.

Royals 8, Blue Jays 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — John Buck doubled twice and drove in a pair of runs, helping the Royals rally and snap a seven-game losing streak. Buck’s double in a six-run eighth inning scored pinch-runner Esteban German with the go-ahead run. Buck also doubled home Ross Gload in the fourth, snapping the Royals’ 15-inning scoreless drought. The eight runs were a season high for Kansas City. David DeJesus, who extended his hitting streak to eight games, drove in three runs, including two in the eighth. Billy Butler singled home Jose Guillen with the first run of the inning, in which the Royals sent 11 men to the plate.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Braves 6, Mets 3

NEW YORK — Jair Jurrjens walked three consecutive batters with the bases loaded in the third inning, then got his first major league hit ahead of Kelly Johnson’s tiebreaking, two-run homer to help the Braves beat Mets 6-3. Johnson had four RBIs for the Braves, who sent the Mets to their fifth loss in six games following a five-game winning streak. Jurrjens (3-2) recovered from his wild stretch — he didn’t allow another batter to reach and retired his final 10 batters — combining with four relievers on a two-hitter.

Nationals 5, Cubs 3

WASHINGTON — Wil Nieves hit first major league homer, a two-run shot in the ninth inning, to give Washington the win over Chicago. Nieves drove an 0-2 pitch from Chicago’s Bob Howry (0-2) into the Washington bullpen in right field for the Nationals’ second straight win after dropping 16 of 19 games. Jon Rauch (2-0), Washington’s fifth pitcher of the evening, worked a perfect ninth. Chicago, the NL Central leaders, had won six of its previous seven. Nick Johnson hit a two-run home run off Ryan Dempster into the second deck in right field in the first inning. It was the first home run to reach the second deck of Nationals Park since it opened this season.

Marlins 3, Brewers 0, 10 innings

MILWAUKEE — Wes Helms’ fielder’s choice with the bases loaded in the top of the 10th inning helped the Marlins beat the Brewers. With one out and the infield playing in, Helms hit a ground ball to shortstop J.J. Hardy. Hanley Ramirez raced home, beating Hardy’s one-hop throw to the plate.
