Joseph Briganti, Sr. (Class of 1942, golf): At age 12 began caddying at the Youngstown Country Club in 1936. Was the Class “A” caddy champion at YCC and “Champ of Champs” at Poland Country Club in both 1940-41. After serving in the Navy, he was club champion at Hubbard Golf Course from 1950-52. He played in the YMCA golf league for 57 years and has had three holes in one, all at Hubbard.

Michael Butch (’50, special award): Recognized for his long participation with athletics in the Valley, Mike played basketball and baseball. In 1956 Mike began a 40-year teaching career with the Youngstown Schools during which he also coached and served as athletic director. He also enjoyed an officiating career which included 28 years as a high school basketball official and 30 years as a football official. Mike is still active as a track and volleyball official. His good work on the court and playing field resulted in his being selected as an official for high school tournament basketball for 18 years and high school football playoffs for 20 years, and also as an official for the North-South all-star game.

Marcus D. Edwards (’89, basketball): A two-year starting forward, co-captain of the 1988 team and captain of the 1989 city championship team. Was All-City in 1988 (second team) and 1989 (first team). He was also selected as All-Northeastern Ohio (second team) and All-Ohio (honorable mention). Selected for the McDonald’s All-Star Classic as a senior. During his high school career, averaged 17 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists per game and was an honor-roll student.

Monica D. Fletcher (’89, basketball): Played three years on varsity, highlighted by her senior year, when she averaged 14 points and 12 rebounds per game and was selected All-City. She also played volleyball for four years.

Berchindle Foster (’83, football): An outstanding linebacker, he started playing at age nine with the Boys Club and McGuffey Bulldogs teams. In high school, he played four years under coaches Gus Hlebovy and Herman Jackson. He also served as kicker, long snapper and on special teams. Helped the 1982 team to the city co-championship and was named All-City.

Mike Garcia (’48, special award): An outstanding track and field and cross country coach, Garcia taught for 33 years at Austintown Fitch, retiring in 1990. After eight years coaching football program, he became the head track coach and head cross country coach. His concentration on the development of distance runners brought success to his track teams, but resulted in overwhelming success in cross country, recording 490 wins, over 30 seasons, including 101 major championships and 42 major runners-up. His team won 20 Steel Valley Conferences, 11 sectional, seven district, and three state championships, and produced four individual state champions, a three-time high school All-American, and five college All-Americans.

Lloyd Hopkins Jr. (’85, track): An outstanding sprinter, he competed in the 100 and 200, and 400- and 1600-meter relays. He was city meet MCP in 1984 and 1985, breaking the meet record in the 100 (10.5) at the regional meet his senior year. He was also the team MVP in 1984 and 1985. Also played football and basketball and was named All-City in football as a running back.

Ernest Jones (’64, football): A four-year letterman, playing linebacker, guard, and offensive and defensive end. His leadership skills were recognized by being named co-captain in his senior year.

Shanise McElroy Kimbrough (’95, track): MVP of the city meet in 1993 and 1994, runnning individual and relay sprint events. She was also a cheerleader, played in the band and was a member of the National Honor Society.

Jamaul Lewis (’91, baseball): A four year All-City pitcher and also batted over .400. He finished his career at East with a pitching record of 38-6. Also played first base. Had tryouts with the Pirates and Royals. Also played basketball and was a member of the 1989 teamthat won the city championship.

Raymond Lozinski (’45, special award): Inducted for his achievements in weightlifting, Lozinski also lettered in football and basketball. Became involved in Olympic weightlifting through the YMCA and competed on the state, regional and national levels. After a hiatus of 16 years, returned with the emergence of the master’s program. He has competed in 12 world masters championships and received medals for each event including two gold, eight silver and two bronze. Inducted into the Ohio Weightlifting Hall of Fame, lifetime achievement category, in 2000 and was also voted the Ohio Olympic weightlifter of the year in 1999.

Preston J. Mays (’98, football): Better known as P.J., he played four years of football and distinguished himself as an outstanding running back and was selected to the All-City team in both his junior and senior years. As a junior, he received an honorable mention all-state, and in his senior year, he was named second team all state and was awarded the Frank Sinkwich best running back award.

James McKee (’75, football): A three-year letterman at safety, where he earned All-City and Most Valuable Defensive player honors in 1974. Also an excellent baseball player earning three letters, and a most valuable player award in that sport also.

Charles L. Perdue (’93, football): Three-time All-City selection at running back. Also a member of the track team that won the city meet all four years. He also qualified for the state meet four times in sprints.

Dominic V. Perry (’35, Memorial Award): Played running back as a freshman then moved to center for three years. He was named team captain as a senior and was selected All-City. Later played semi-pro with the Canton Bulldogs.
