Spartan Corroto excels at Gannon


Jaclyn Corroto, a senior shortstop for the Gannon University softball team from Boardman High, broke two school records this week.

Last Sunday, Corroto became Gannon’s career hits leader. Tuesday, she set the school career record for runs scored.

Corroto went 4-for-4 at the plate in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday against Hillsdale, won by Gannon, 8-7, to climb into first place in career hits at the school with 234. She eclipsed the previous record of 232 held by Sarah Kane (1998-01).

Among Corroto’s four hits was a three-run homer, and she finished the game with four RBIs.

Corroto has built her hits total to 237.

Tuesday, in a doubleheader at Clarion won by Gannon, 10-3, and 16-8, Corroto scored five runs to give her 157 career runs. She surpassed the record of 156 runs held by Larissa Smith (1994-97).

Corroto also holds the school’s career record for doubles (53) and is expected to break the career record for games played this weekend. She has played in 203 games. The record is 205 games held by Kane.

Corroto also moved into a tie for third place for career stolen bases (46). She also ranks No. 5 in career RBIs with 124.

Corroto leads Gannon this season in runs scored (34) and doubles (11), while batting .295 (41-for-139) with 23 RBIs.

Gannon (26-18, 6-10 GLIAC) will play Saginaw Valley State today in a doubleheader. Then the Knights play host to Northwood on Saturday.

Farina sets NCAA 3-point goals record

WEST LIBERTY, W, Va. — Renee Farina, a 5-foot-9 senior guard for the West Liberty State women’s basketball team this season from Boardman and Salem High, has set an NCAA all-divisions record.

The NCAA has confirmed to Hilltoppers’ coach Lynn Ullom that Farina has become the first woman in all NCAA divisions to score 100 or more 3-point goals for three seasons in a row.

Farina made 100 3-point goals this season, 112 as a junior, 110 her sophomore year and two as a freshman to account for her 324 treys, which also set the school’s career 3-point goals record. She surpassed the previous record of 321 held by Tara Johnson.

Farina set the mark by making five 3-point goals in the Hilltoppers’ 65-56 loss to Shepherd in the first round of the NCAA Division II East Region tournament.

Her 324 career 3-point goals rank No. 10 in NCAA Div. II history. She’s also 12th on the all time scoring list for West Liberty with 1,163 points.

Goerig sets shot put record for Capital

BEXLEY — Emily Goerig, a freshman member of the Capital University women’s indoor track team from Leetonia High, set the school shot put record recently.

Goerig broke the record with a throw of 41 feet, 83‚Ñ4 inches at the Ohio Athletic Conference Qualifier meet held at Otterbein College in Westerville.

She also was a recent winner in the Crusaders’ outdoor track season opener March 22 at the Bridgewater (Va.) Invitational, when she swept the shot put with a throw of 39-21‚Ñ2.

Goerig, an art education major, is the daughter of David and Elizabeth Goerig of Leetonia.
