DiDomenico fires no-hitter; Poland blanks Howland


Canfield and Springfield also posted shutouts.

CANTON — Making her first varsity start, Boardman freshman Alexandra DiDomenico, threw a no-hitter to lead the Spartans softball team to an 11-1 win Thursday over Canton McKinley.

Two errors kept DiDomenico from a perfect game.

DiDomenico allowed no walks and struck out seven against the 17 batters she faced. She also drove in two runs.

Junior Shannon Morrow had two home runs and an RBI single for four RBIs for Boardman (7-3, 2-3 Federal League).

Also for the Spartans, Kelsey Ford had a solo home run while Brooke Meenachan had two doubles.

Jamie Massaro, Angela Martin and Katie Hawkins each had a pair of singles.

McKinley is 5-8, 1-5.

Hoover 6, Fitch 0

AUSTINTOWN — Carly Ortz doubled for the Falcons’ (7-5, 2-3 Federal) only hit.

For the Vikings (12-1, 5-0), Jessica Simpson tossed the one-hitter and Megan Lilley tripled.

Poland 2, Howland 0

HOWLAND — Jenna Barnhart and Jordan Palumbo singled and scored the runs for the Bulldogs (10-3, 4-2 Metro Athletic Conference).

Allyson Kennedy contributed a double and RBI single.

For the Tigers (7-9, 4-3), Katie Peoples had two hits.

Canfield 8, Struthers 0

STRUTHERS — Melanie West’s three hits triggered the Cardinals’ 14-hit attack. Brittany Danilov and Bryanne Halfhill each had two hits with doubles. Also with two hits were Rachel Melewski and Melissa West.

Winning pitcher Tricia Bettura tossed a three-hitter, striking out five.

For the Wildcats (14-6, 5-3 MAC), Sam Ditman’s two hits included a double.

Springfield 3, Salem 0

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Breanne Mincher tripled, singled and scored a run for the Tigers (7-7).

Ashley Davis hit two singles and scored a run while winning pitcher Erica Burkey (5-6) struck out 10 batters and walked one.

Girard 8, Campbell 4

CAMPBELL — Junior Ashley Isoldi had two singles and an RBI while twin sister Amy Isoldi had two singles.

Junior Megan McGowan had an RBI triple and sophomore Melissa Weitzman doubled for Girard (3-10).

Also for the Indians, Megan McCale had two hits and three RBIs.

Junior Erica Melnik had two singles and an RBI, junior Latonya Butler had a two-run triple and sophomore Alexis Tych also tripled for Campbell (3-7).

Ursuline 4, Lakeview 2

CORTLAND — Casey Lower (10-3) pitched a complete game with 12 strikeouts to pick up the win for the Irish (11-3).

Miranda Carkido hit a double and single, scored once and drove in two runs.

Jessica Yarab hit a double and single, scored once and drove in a run. Mary Alexander hit a double and single while Lower hit a pair of singles.

Angela DiCesare hit a pair of singles for the Bulldogs (10-3).

Lowellville 12, Chaney 2

LOWELLVILLE — Cori Pavlicko pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts to pick up the win.

Brooke Pallozzi hit a triple and double to drive in three runs. She also had a stolen base. Nicole Stoddard had a RBI single and Pavlicko had two RBIs.

Mooney 15, Beaver Local 6

BOARDMAN — Kristen Stahl belted two homers, a double and single, and had five RBIs.

Kelcie Herberger pitched an eight-hitter with four strikeouts and one walk to pace Mooney (12-2) at the Field of Dreams.

Meghan Williams contributed a grand slam and double.

For Beaver Local, Alyson Derenberger slugged a homer, double and single and drove in two runs.

South Range 18, Warren Harding 2

NORTH LIMA — Madison Yanek (4-3) pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks. She also belted a three-run homer, double and single to lead South Range (6-6).

Autumn Carter had a double, two singles and three RBIs while Megan Beachley had a double, two singles and two RBIs to support the Raiders.

Champion 4, Liberty 3

CHAMPION — The Golden Flashes (9-4, 7-1 Trumbull Athletic Conference), behind 3-0, rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning

With one out in the seventh, Jessica Frantz doubled. Amanda Sain singled and an infield error loaded the bases.

Nicole Weaver singled home Frantz and Sain. Katie Saluga doubled home White with the tying run. Ashley Rable’s fielder’s choice loaded the bases and an error brought home Weaver.

Saluga and Frantz each had two hits.

Maplewood 7, Mathews 0

VIENNA — Amanda Peska fired a no-hitter, striking out nine batters and walking one. She also doubled.

Cheyenne Torton hit a two-run homer for the Rockets (10-4, 9-1 Northeast Athletic Conference).

Thorton, Brandy Dunbar, Tarra Snyder and Stacey Sypert each had two hits.

WARREN — Morgan Piacquadio (4-1) pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks for Warren JFK (11-1).

Kim Sylvester had double, single and two RBIs while Alex Raeburn had a single and two RBIs to pace Warren JFK.

C.C. DeWees had a single and two RBIs while Rachael Ratcliffe two singles.
