Baker’s double powers Devils

McDONALD — Alex Baker doubled in the seventh inning Thursday to drive in the tying and winning runs to lead the McDonald High baseball team to a 10-9 victory over Mineral Ridge.

Baker’s hit capped a three-run rally for the Blue Devils (12-3). Baker’s single drove in brothers Mike and Nick Gatta.

Baker finished with four hits, including three singles, and five RBIs. Zach Puntel added two singles and two RBIs, Mike Gatta had three singles while Nick Gatta a double and single.

For Mineral Ridge (8-9), Jason Ferguson homered and doubled for three RBIs. Dominic Armeni contributed a double and single for four RBIs while Joe Mulichak had two hits including a double.

Ferguson’s home run was his sixth this season.

Boardman 2, Hoover 1

NORTH CANTON — Dean Porter’s two hits included a two-run double in the seventh inning. Scoring for the Spartans (10-4, 5-1 Federal League) were Eric Walters and John Tatarka. Winning pitcher Kevin McCulloh struck out three, walked two and scattered five hits.

Austintown Fitch 5, Massillon Perry 4

AUSTINTOWN — Jimmy Kinnick’s single drove in Tony Koch with the winning run in the last of the seventh inning for Fitch (6-6, 4-2 Federal).

Koch had walked, stole second and advanced to third on Jason Bagoly’s fly out.

Kinnick finished with three singles. He also was the winning pitcher with a six-hitter, 10 strikeouts and three walks over the distance.

For Massillon Perry (7-4, 2-4), John Hyde belted a solo homer and two singles.

Poland 15, Campbell 4

POLAND — The Bulldogs (8-4, 5-1 Metro Athletic Conference) scored runs in every inning.

The Bulldogs scored three in the third inning, six in the fourth and three in the fifth in cruising to victory.

Kevin Koval hit a three-run home run while Matt Pitzulo hit a solo shot. Ross Lopez hit a pair of singles. Raul Pizarro hit a double for the Red Devils (10-3, 5-2).

Hubbard 8, Niles 5

NILES — Matt Shelton homered and John Madeline tripled for the Eagles. Hitting doubles were Marc Kanetsky, Bo Slemons and winning pitcher Mike Backles.

For the Red Dragons, Evan Bollinger doubled.

East Palestine 15, East 0

EAST PALESTINE — The Bulldogs (11-3) pounded out 15 hits in winning in five innings. Tim Vargo hit a single, double, triple and drove in four runs. Nick Balamonte hit three singles and drove in two runs. Taylor Snyder hit a triple. Shawn Haywood hit a pair of singles for East.

Springfield 12, Girard 0

GIRARD — Todd Kibby hit a grand slam and triple for five RBIs for Springfield (12-4).

Matt Chopp had a three-hitter with three strikeouts for the Tigers.

Dylan DeJane had two hits and three RBIs while Ronnie Bovo and Matt Semach both had two hits.

Senior Chris Weibel had two singles and senior Anthony Guerrieri had another single for Girard (10-8).

Mathews 2, Maplewood 0

VIENNA — Rick Sommers and John Scudier had RBI hits in the first inning to propel the Mustangs (9-3, 5-2 Northeast Athletic Conference).

Colin Bowser opened the first frame with a single and stolen base. He scored on Sommers’ single. After a stolen base, Scudier doubled.

Sommers (2-0) was the winning pitcher, striking out six and walking one.

The Rockets are 6-12.
