MVSD board awards contracts

MINERAL RIDGE—The Mahoning Valley Sanitary District Board of Directors approved more than $l.6 million in contracts for upgrades to the treatment facility’s water quality and filtration.

. The largest contract, more than $1.2 million, was awarded to MS Consultants, Youngstown, which will develop systems for removing solids and certain chemicals from the reservoir. The remaining contracts were awarded to CT Consultants, Willoughby, and DLZ Ohio, Cuyahoga Falls, for improvements to filters and gates.

The board has also granted an extension for completion of a soil analysis by Youngstown State University. Chief Engineer Thomas Holloway said that the university has taken soil samples from the bottom of Meander Reservoir to determine what caused the growth of cold water algae in 1998. Holloway said that although no new growths have been detected, the study findings may help the MVSD prevent a recurrence.
