M.V. Panthers capture crown at tournament


MONROEVILLE, Pa. — The Mahoning Valley Panthers, a traveling youth basketball team, won the recent Ohio-Pennsylvania Challenge tournament.

Comprised of boys in 8th grade, the Panthers finished 5-0 at the tournament.

Their first win was over the Elite All-Stars, 48-24, as Lewis Lee scored 11 points. Travis White and Will Mahone added nine each.

The Panthers next defeated Morgantown Red 50-36. Dayne Hammond had 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Lee added 12 points and Mahone nine.

The Panthers then defeated the Pennsylania Hoosiers, 48-34. Mahone had 13 points and three assists, while Lee scored 10 and Hammond eight, White six and Dan Chepke five.

In a 56-38 win over Morgantown Blue, Lee scored 17 points, Hammond had 14, White 12 and Mahone 11.

In the final game, the Panthers defeated Morgantown Red, 57-36, as Mahone scored 15 points. Hammond and White added 11 each, Lee scored nine and Will Yobi had eight.
