Hints can help make lipstick stay or go

Dear Readers: Did you know that an average tube of lipstick has about 260 applications? So, if you apply lipstick three times a day, a tube should last about three months. To make lipstick stay on longer, use these hints:

UApply your favorite color to your lips; blot with tissue paper. Dab some face powder on your lips and then reapply lipstick.

UDon’t lick your lips constantly, because it will take off the lipstick, and it causes them to be chapped.

UApply petroleum jelly to add gloss and to heal chapped lips. You can use it as a base for lip colors you mix yourself.

UIf you use lipstick, you are bound to get it on clothing. To get lipstick out of a washable blouse, put paper towels down. Place the stained area facedown on them. Pour rubbing alcohol on a clean, white cloth. Dab and blot the stained area until the stain is gone. If any remains, apply a prewash spray or stick, or rub liquid laundry detergent into the area and launder.

Dear Heloise: Here is how I make my house smell delicious. I fill a large pot about 1‚Ñ2 to 3‚Ñ4 full with water, then add a tablespoon of vinegar and a dash of cinnamon, pumpkin-pie spice or nutmeg. Any fragrant spice that you like will work. I even mix in some apple slices and a dash or two of vanilla extract.

Then bring to a simmer on the stove, and my house smells wonderful. Be sure to check the pot every so often and add more water as needed. do not let it scorch or boil dry. E. from Utah

Dear Heloise: Several years ago, my husband died and left me with an interesting dilemma that I am still trying to unravel. I inherited a key ring with 37 unidentified keys. I am afraid to throw them away because I occasionally find a lock, and then I try all the unidentified keys. In the meantime, I just look at them and wonder.

To prevent this problem, I took all my keys, copied them on a copier and wrote down under each what it goes to so my family will know. I put the copy with my other valuable papers. I also wrote the combinations to my two safes. Since these documents are kept in my safe-deposit box, I am not at risk. Cheryl, via e-mail

I, too, have a key ring with lots of orphan keys that I can’t bear to toss. I’m thinking of making wind chimes! Heloise

Dear Heloise: To help me track the amount of water that I drink daily, I fill a 4-cup measuring cup with water and add ice to it. Each time I eat a meal or a snack, I drink 1 cup of water. Anna Victoria Reich, Stafford, Va.
