Girard rallies for 10-9 victory over Hubbard


The Indians had to overcome a 7-2 deficit to beat the Eagles.

GIRARD — A day after losing to Champion 11-8, Girard found itself down to Hubbard, 7-2, in the bottom of the third inning of Wednesday’s baseball game.

Second-year coach Jason Johnson told his players that they could either pack it in or play harder.

Girard scored five runs to tie the game, then went on to hand Hubbard its first TAC loss, 10-9.

“They didn’t give up,” Johnson said of his Indians’ reaction in the third inning at Tod Park.

Winning pitcher Marty Brinker’s two RBIs in the bottom of the fourth pushed Girard ahead, 9-7, before a double by sophomore Aaron Jennings gave the Indians 10-7 cushion.

Mike Carnahan’s two-run homer in the sixth pulled Hubbard within 10-9.

Senior Eric Archer relieved Brink to start the seventh and got the save. Cory Hitt’s grounder to shortstop Larry Goist was thrown past first baseman Chris Weibel. Catcher Brett Cubellis hustled to retrieve the throw and threw to second base where Nick DeVore put the tag on Hitt for the inning’s first out.

After a walk, a double play from Goist to DeVore to Weibel ended the game.

Goist had a home run and four RBIs, Jennings had two doubles for three RBIs and Brinker knocked in two runs for Girard (10-7, 7-3 TAC).

Bo Slemons had a grand slam and a single for four RBIs and Matt Shelton had two hits. Carnahan and John Madeline finished with two RBIs apiece for Hubbard (11-4, 8-1).

Lakeview 11, Brookfield 1

BROOKFIELD — Adam Lindsey pitched a three-hitter, striking out 10, and Lakeview cracked out 10 hits to roll past Brookfield in six innings.

Michael Pasternak had three hits and three RBIs for the Bulldogs (7-8, 6-4 TAC), while Ryan Nisbett added two hits including a triple. Losing pitcher Adam Hall and Pat Mulligan both had doubles for the Warriors.

Ursuline 5, Mooney 4

STRUTHERS — The Ursuline High School baseball team, which fell behind 4-2 in the top of the seventh inning, rallied for three runs to post a Steel Valley Conference victory at Cene Park.

Mooney had taken a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, then added two in the seventh. Ursuline tied the score in the sixth.

With two outs in the seventh, Ross Revella of the Irish (13-2, 3-0) scored on an error. Dan Baco singled home Paul Cene and David Rossi with the deciding runs.

Robert Switka (2-0) pitched a complete game for Ursuline. He gave up seven hits and struck out seven. Joe Weilbruda hit a pair of singles, stole two bases, scored once and drove in a run.

The Cardinals (12-2, 2-1) were led by Bob Herberger who hit a triple, single, scored once and drove in a run. Losing pitcher Drew Fitzpatrick, who scattered seven hits, hit a double.

Chaney 12, East 0

YOUNGSTOWN — Dustin Guyer and Clement Franklin combined to pitch a one-hitter with nine strikeouts. Victor Cardarelli and Joe Balog had two hits apiece for the Cowboys (4-11, 2-1 SVC).

Poland 8, Fitch 2

POLAND — A four-run first inning is all that Poland (7-4) needed.

Trent Vallinger (2-1) scattered seven hits with five strikeouts to pick up the win.

Drew Petro hit a home run and single and drove in three runs for the Bulldogs (7-4). Mark Turnbull hit a double, single and scored twice.

Tony Koch hit a double, triple and drove in a run for the Falcons (5-6).

Canfield 6, Salem 1

CANFIELD — John Manzoian hit a pair of triples, scored three times and drove in two runs to keep Canfield 12-2, unbeaten 7-0 in the Metro Athletic Conference. Jared Turocy also had two hits including a triple, while Dave Brown tossed a two-hitter and struck out a pair.

Salem (1-6) had a double by David Wright and a single by Derek Ball.

Campbell 2, Niles 1

NILES —Rual Pizzaro of Campbell fired a two-hitter with nine strikeouts to pick up the win. Mike Kelley, in a losing cause, allowed only three hits with 15 strikeouts. Pizzaro hit a double, while Niles’ Pat Watson and Nich Harper each hit a double.

Mathews 10, Southington 4

SOUTHINGTON — Kyle Davis’ three hits included a double. He also had a run and two RBIs.

Rick Sommers, John Scudier and Jared Nichols each had two hits for the Mustangs (8-3, 4-2 Northeast Athletic Conference).

For the Wildcats (2-8), Ryan Hall had three hits.

Alliance 8, Southeast 4

RAVENNA — Tim Sanders, J.J. Williams, Audrey Hendershot and Jeremy Holt each hit a home run to ignite the Aviators’ (9-4) attack. Sanders also hit two singles. Quez McLendon hit a pair of singles. The Pirates (4-9) were limited to a pair of singles.
