Hints I learned along the way are shared

Dear Readers: Last year, I traveled all over the country making personal appearances, giving speeches for many different groups and also sharing hints on TV. Looking over the calendar for 2007 before putting it away, I realized I picked up several hints along the way, and it’s time to pass them on:

UWarren, Ohio — I gave a speech at Trumbull Town Hall, and I visited the newspaper. Hint: Use correction fluid on scuffed athletic shoes or a white stove top.

UBonita Springs, Fla., Friends of the Library. Hint: Donate your time and books! Our libraries need both, so see what they need or how you can help out.

UI gave several presentations focusing on Hints for a Healthy Heart for the American Heart Association. I am involved because my mother, the original Heloise, died of heart disease at the age of 58. Mended Hearts members are survivors or family members of someone who has had a heart incident, young or old. They reach out to help others going through the same situation, whether it’s a heart attack, a baby with a heart defect or a young person with a heart problem. Hint: Learn to slow down, and try not to stress about things you have no control over!

UI spoke to college students at Northwest Vista College and Texas State University about starting out in the work world. Hint: Learn everything you can at every job you have. I washed sheets and towels at a motel right out of high school for a summer job and now know NOT to overstuff the washer and dryer because it makes the sheets wrinkle.

UIn Texarkana, Texas, I spoke to the Junior League for its 80th anniversary! The good works this group has done through the years are too many to list. Hint: Like sister groups, they help young, old and less fortunate, and do it with a smile.

The people I meet on my trips and at my appearances are just amazing! I have learned that no matter where you live or what your income, each of you has a hint to share! That is what my column is about.

Remember, I test all hints here in my home, and my staff tries them at home. We check with experts in every field and are always updating and rechecking our information. Just because your mother or grandmother did something in a particular way doesn’t mean it works today! We’ll find out for you. Heloise

Dear Heloise: When I send a check to a charity, I write the amount, date and name of the charity at the top border of the calendar month. This is on my kitchen calendar, which is my diary and reference pad. Many charities send pleas monthly, and I give once a year to each of my favorites. Now it is easy to check the top border of each month to see if I have already donated. This has saved me many dollars. An Ohio Admirer

XSend a money-saving or timesaving hint to Heloise, P.O. Box 795000, San Antonio, TX 78279-5000, or you can fax it to (210) HELOISE or e-mail it to Heloise@Heloise.com.
