Durkin’s blast leads Mooney to 7-6 victory


His two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning beat Boardman.

BOARDMAN — Matt Durkin hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning and propelled Cardinal Mooney to a 7-6 victory over Boardman Monday.

The Spartans who trailed 7-4 going to the bottom of the seventh, rallied for two runs but couldn’t overtake the Cardinals.

Durkin finished the game 4-for-4 at the plate, while Drew Fitzpatrick add three hits and Tim Marlowe two including a double. Mike Popio and Nick Dinello each had two hits for the Spartans, while John Tatarka added a home run.

Scott Smith (5-0) picked up the win with relief help from Dan Eich.

Canfield 3, Howland 2

CANFIELD — Mark Carrocce went 3-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs to lead Canfield (11-2, 6-0), which survived four errors and a seventh-inning scare to hold off Howland in a Metro Athletic Conference baseball game.

Brian Fox struck out seven and held the Tigers scoreless through six innings before running into trouble in the seventh. After surrendering two runs and loading the bases with two outs, Fox was relieved by Matt Matune, who got a game-ending flyout.

Dan Banna added a RBI single for Canfield.

Jared Kirin had two hits and an RBI and Vince Villio added three hits for the Tigers.

Poland 15, Niles 5

NILES — Mark Turnbull, Matt Pitzulo, Trent Vallinger, Zack Custer and Kevin Koval each had three hits for the Bulldogs.

For Niles, Anthony Capogreco and Evan Bollinger each hit two doubles.

Salem 2, Struthers 0

SALEM — David Wright and Jim Armeni combined to pitch a two-hit shutout as Salem blanked Struthers.

Brandon Holland singled home one run in the second and Shane Kibler scored the other on a Struthers error for the Quakers (4-6, 1-5 MAC). Tyler Serich had both hits for the Wildcats (7-8, 0-6).

Campbell 12, Warren JFK 2

WARREN — Nico Magnolia struck out eight batters and walked one for the Red Devils (8-2).

Raul Pizzaro hit two doubles and Kyle Firm’s two hits included a double. Dan Sacui two hits while Alex Lopez scored twice.

Yo. Christian 19, East 2

YOUNGSTOWN — John Pecchia (1-1) pitched three hitless innings of relief and also had three singles at the plate to lead YCS (5-3). Ed Gonda had a grand slam and Jose Echevestre added two hits.

Springfield 4, East Palestine 1

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Todd Kibby tossed a two-hitter, striking out eight without walking a batter, to lead Springfield (10-4, 6-1 ITCL Tier One), which took over first place in the league.

Kibby also had a two-run double and Dylan DeJane also had a double.

Nick Baiamonte struck out five and walked three to get the loss for EP.

Hubbard 11, Brookfield 1

HUBBARD — Steve Zubyk (3-0) struck out five batters and walked two for the Eagles (10-3, 7-0 Trumbull Athletic Conference).

Marc Kanetsky’s three hits drove in three runs and he scored twice. Matt Shelton’s two hits included a double. Mike Carnahan also doubled.

Also with two hits were John Madeline, Bo Slemons, Frank Palestro and Tim Schriladi.

For the Warriors, Ryan Miller had two hits.

Lakeview 8, LaBrae 2

CORTLAND — Robert Franks pitched a complete game four-hitter, while David Hunter had a 3-run homer to lead Lakeview (6-7, 5-4 TAC).

Michael Pasternak hade three hits, while Sam Jenkins and Adam Lindsey each added two hits. Hunter had four RBIs on the day. Losing pitcher Dave Hinzman and Dave Gibson each had two hits for the Vikings.

United 9, South Range 6

NORTH LIMA — McCavitt Carter, Jeremy Walker and T.J. Rosenberg each had two hits for United, which took a 9-0 lead.

Jack Dawson had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs for South Range (3-8, 2-5 ITCL Tier One), which had five errors. Steve Bensinger and Gavin Snyder each added three hits.

Lowellville 13, Wellsville 3

LOWELLVILLE — Vince Travaline had two hits, including an inside-the-park home run, and Drew Skelly and Anthony Alfano each had two hits for the Rockets (10-2, 8-1 ITCL Tier Two), who are tied with McDonald atop the conference standings.

Brandon LaClair had two hits for Wellsville (4-8).

McDonald 15, Southern 1

McDONALD — Anthony Raschilla hit a double and grand slam for the Blue Devils (10-3, 8-1 ITCL2).

Mike Gatta, Mike Thomas and Zach Puntel each had two hits.

Winning pitcher Alex Baker (2-1) struck out seven and walked one.

Leetonia 6, Western Reserve 4

LEETONIA — Alex Perkins had four hits, scored a run and drove in another.

Winning pitcher Ryan Gruszecki (4-1) struck out 11 batters and walked none. He also had two hits for the Bears (7-3, 5-2 ITCL2).

Josh Selway had two hits and scored a run.

For the Blue Devils (8-5, 5-2), Gabe Gaudet singled and scored twice.

Columbiana 11, Lisbon 1

COLUMBIANA — Josh Weikart had two hits including a double and Josh Savenko tossed a three-hitter in a five inning win over Lisbon.

Savenko also added two hits and Josh Harold added three RBIs. Aaron Sweeney had two of the three hits for Lisbon.

Sebring 13, Jackson-Milton 2

NORTH JACKSON — Steve Rastopper had three hits including two doubles and winning pitcher Zach Tischo added two more hits as Sebring rolled in six innings.

Jeff Karsh had three of Jackson-Milton’s six hits including a double.

Crestview 5, Mineral Ridge 1

COLUMBIANA — Mike Cervone’s lead off home run ignited a three-run rally in the third inning as Crestview toppled Mineral Ridge.

Carter Hill had two hits and Josh Orr and Corey Hill each doubled for the Rebels, Dominic Armeni had two of the Rams three hits.

Newton Falls 4, Liberty 2

NEWTON FALLS — Matt Lubonovick struck out eight batters and walked one for the Tigers (4-4, 4-4 TAC).

Justin Machamer had two hits and Jan Pugh drove in borh runs for the Leopards (0-7, 0-6).

Southeast 2, Akron Coventry 1

RAVENNA — Andy Hartman singled home Alex Blake in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Southeast the win over Coventry.

Anthony Pennington had a home run and two singles to lead the Pirates (4-7, 1-4), while Zach Steele pitched a three-hitter.

Struthers 10, Warren Harding 4

WARREN — Mike Vitucci and Sean O’Brien each had doubles and two RBIs for the Wildcats on Saturday. Steve Wilaj doubled and scored twice.

For the Raiders, Josh Fulmer’s two hits included a double.
