Lariccia is named

NILES — Anthony Lariccia of Boardman has been named the Mahoning Valley Italian-American Sports Hall of Fame Man-of-the-Year.

Each May, the organization conducts its annual Scholarship and Man-of-the-Year Banquet.

At the banquet, the organization honors and awards 23 college bound students with $500 each, cash scholarships, and honor Lariccia as Man-of-the-Year.

The Awards Banquet will be at 6 p.m. May 6 at Vernon’s Cafe, Youngstown-Warren Road. Tickets for the event are $45 per person.

Tigers have combine

CANFIELD — The newly formed Penn-Ohio Tigers minor league professional football team will hold a player combine on Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Creekside Golf Dome in Girard.

The combine is free of charge to all interested players.

The Tigers will be part of the Grassroots Professional Football League and will play their home games at Canfield High Stadium. Their season opener is May 31.

Canfield wins opener

YOUNGSTOWN — Canfield took the opening session of the Penn-Ohio Golf League held at Youngstown Country Club.

Canfield totaled 27.5 points to edge out Youngstown Country Club with 27. Boardman finished at 8.5 and Grove City had 7.

Canfield’s Scott Porter was medalist with a 74, while teammate John Scarsella shot 76. YCC’s Dan Goodman and Boardman’s Greg Rossi each had 75.

Best-ball winners were Porter and Glenn Milton.

Murray sets mark

ALLIANCE — Mount Union College freshman Lucas Murray was named the Ohio Athletic Conf. men’s golfer of the week.

Murray was the medalist at the Ohio Northern Polar Bear Invitational with a meet record 73-73—146.

Jake Hochendoner to Oberlin

POLAND — Jake Hochendoner of Poland Seminary High School will continue his football career at Oberlin College in the fall.

Hochendoner, a 1st Team All-Mac, 1st Team All-NEO and 2nd Team All-Ohio pick will play defensive end for the Yeomen.

He is an honor student with a 4.0 GPA.

Koufos enters draft

COLUMBUS — Ohio State freshman center Kosta Koufos will declare for the NBA draft but will not immediately sign with an agent, the school said Monday.

By not signing with an agent, the 7-foot Koufos leaves open the possibility of returning to the Buckeyes next season, Ohio State spokesman Dan Wallenberg said in a statement.

Koufos averaged 14.4 points and 6.7 rebounds for the Buckeyes last season and had 22 points and nine rebounds in Ohio State’s win over Massachusetts in the NIT championship game.

The decision by Koufos to declare for the draft was reported earlier Monday by FoxSports.com and The Canton Repository.

Tiffin hires coach

TIFFIN — A former Toledo assistant is the new head football coach at Tiffin University.

The school announced Monday that David Walkosky will take over a team that finished 9-2 last year.

Walkosky replaces Nate Cole who resigned last month to pursue other coaching opportunities.

Walkosky spent last season at Washington State and was at Toledo from 1999-2006.

Spurs’ Manu Ginobili wins sixth man award

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili — good enough to be a starter on about any team — won the NBA’s sixth man award given to the league’s best reserve on Monday.

Ginobili led the Spurs in scoring, averaging a career-high 19.5 points to go with 4.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists. Ginobili came off the bench in 51 of the 74 games he played this season.
