Teenager takes pole

MEXICO CITY — Colin Braun beat out a man nearly 30 years his senior Saturday to win the pole for today’s Corona Mexico 200.

Braun, a 19-year-old making his third start on NASCAR’s Nationwide Series, posted a fast lap of 102.756 mph in his Ford to edge 48-year-old Scott Pruett.

Defending series champion Carl Edwards was third.

“I’m really proud of that whole team,” Braun said. “We ran through a whole bunch of changes. ... Shows how much work those guys have put in.”

Braun, of Ovalo, Texas, had five years of road course experience before joining Roush Fenway Racing.

He earned one pole and two second-place finishes in the Rolex Grand Am Daytona Prototype Series.

Toronto FC tops Real Salt Lake, 1-0

TORONTO — Toronto FC newcomer Laurent Robert scored on a free kick in the 31st minute Saturday for a 1-0 win against Real Salt Lake in their Major League Soccer home opener.

Robert, a former French international who was signed by Toronto (2-2) this month, scored the game-winner from just outside the top of the 18-yard box, firing the ball through the Salt Lake wall and past goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

The free kick, awarded after a foul on newcomer Amado Guevara, held up as the winner before the capacity crowd of 20,219 fans at BMO Field.

Toronto’s Marco Velez received a yellow card in the 72nd minute. Salt Lake midfielder Nathan Sturgis left the game in the 27th minute with a left hamstring strain. He was replaced by Carey Talley.

Weekley in front

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Defending champion Boo Weekley continued his remarkable run at Harbour Town Golf Links, using a stretch of five straight birdies to move in front Saturday in the Verizon Heritage.

Weekley shot a 6-under 65 to reach 15 under and move three strokes ahead of Anthony Kim (67) and five in front of Aaron Baddeley (67), Jason Bohn (67) and Cliff Kresge (68). Second-round leader Lucas Glover shot a 73 to drop seven shots back.

Weekley chipped in on the 71st and 72nd holes a year ago to beat Ernie Els for his first PGA Tour victory.

The good-natured, self-proclaimed country boy from the Florida Panhandle hasn’t slowed down in his return.

Ochoa leads Ginn

REUNION, Fla. — Lorena Ochoa left her fellow golfers in an all-too-familiar position Saturday: trying to make up ground on the Mexican star.

Ochoa shot a 7-under 65 in the third round of the Ginn Open, moved to 16 under and took a one-shot lead over rookie Yani Tseng.

Ochoa also edged closer to her fourth consecutive victory.

“I just like the way I feel right now,” Ochoa said. “I trust that my game is at a good level and I should be ready for anything.”

Given the way she’s played this year — Ochoa has won four of her five starts by a combined 34 shots — the final 18 holes seem like a mere formality.

Wiebe takes lead

LUTZ, Fla. — Knee surgery hasn’t slowed Mark Wiebe a bit.

Coming off a victory two weeks ago in the Cap Cana Championship in the Dominican Republic, Wiebe followed his opening 66 with a 65 on Saturday to take a three-stroke lead in the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am.

“I feel confident with my game,” Wiebe said. “I played some good golf.”

Wiebe reached 11 under to tie the event 36-hole record held by Bruce Fleisher (2000 and 2002).

Defending champion Tom Watson (71) and Scott Hoch (67) were 8 under, and Tom Jenkins (66) and Mike Reid (68) followed at 6 under.

Behindatthebar wins at Lexington Stakes

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Over the course of a week, trainer Todd Pletcher went from having no Kentucky Derby qualifier to having three.

The latest, however, likely won’t be joining him at Churchill Downs.

Behindatthebar pulled in front of Samba Rooster down the stretch and won the $325,000 Lexington Stakes by a length on Saturday at Keeneland, picking up $201,500 — more than enough graded stakes earnings to qualify for next month’s Derby.

Pletcher didn’t rule out an appearance for his colt, but signaled it was doubtful the horse would join stablemates Monba and Cowboy Cal in the May 3 Run for the Roses.

Those two finished first and second in the Blue Grass Stakes a week ago, also on Keeneland’s Polytrack.

Peach Flambe wins

Ridden by Eddie Castro, Peach Flambe ran the 1 1-8 miles in 1:49.67 and paid $4, $2.80 and $2.40.

Cat Can Do returned $4.40 and $3, and Lady Byar paid $3.80 to show.
