Salem girls, Trinity boys track champs


EAST PALESTINE — The Salem High girls scored 130.5 points and the Trinity boys 133 to capture titles at the Bulldog Invitational track and field meet Saturday at Reid Stadium.

Zane Smith of United took first place in the 200 and 400 meter dashes, while Jennifer Bjelac of Newton Falls won the 100 hurdles and 800. Sarah Brobeck of Salem won the discus (138 feet, 2 inches) , Suzanne Waterbeck the 300 hurdles (50.4) and Lauren Shivers the 1600 (5:43.2).

In the Boots Hawkins meet at Columbiana, Mineral Ridge took the girls crown with 144 points and Rams’ boys won with 143.

Nicole Honsaker of Mineral Ridge was given the high points (40) award. She took the 100 hurdles in a record 15.9 seconds, the long jump with a record 15 feet, 9 1/2 inch jump and she won the 300 hurdles and 200. Steph Case of Columbiana took first place in the 1600 and 3200 runs.

John Karmizan of Unied was given the boys high points (22) award. He took the 1600 and 800 runs. Jakob Leon of Crestview set a record in the high jump as he cleared 6 feet, 7 inches.

Shanae’ Butler scored 25 points in leading Warren Harding to the girls championship with 170 points in the Liberty Invitational.

Butler took first place in the 100 (12.7) and the 200 (27.4) . Claire Brugler of Warren Harding took first place in the 100 hurdles (17.4) and the 300 hurdles (52.1).

Warren Harding’s DeAver Williamson scored 20 points leading the Raiders to the boys crown with 159 points. He took first place in the 100 (10.7) and the 200 (22.8). Aaron Reynolds of Liberty also scored 20 points. He placed first in the shot put (45-6 1/2 ) and the discus (141-4).

McDonald High’s boys 133 points, and girls 135 ran away with titles in the LaBrae Invitational.

Mike Mangiarelli of Howland won the high hurdles (15.5) and the long jump (20-2). Audra Mahue of Warren JFK took first place in the 1600 (5:20.4) and the 800 (2:18.7).
