Salem Community Hospital and Salem Community Centerwill co-sponsor an AARP 55 Alive Driver Safety Program from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 1 and 2 at the center, 1098 N. Ellsworth Ave., Salem. The refresher course for drivers over the age of 50 includes adjusting to age-related changes, defensive driving, and new traffic laws. The cost is $10 (some insurance companies offer reduced rates for completion of the course). Class size is limited. To reserve space call (330) 332-5885.

Senior Center of Mahoning County, 1110 Fifth Ave., Youngstown, has planned the following activities: Monday, Income Tax assistance from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and bridge at 1; Tuesday, oil painting at 10 a.m., computer class at 10 and noon, Spanish review at 1, and digital club at 2 p.m.; Wednesday, watercolor class at 10, computer at 10 a.m. and noon, Tai Chi at noon, and 500 cards at 1 p.m.; and Thursday, Woodcarvers and Watch Our Weight Club at 9 a.m.; DJ Stitchers at 10, exercise at noon, and line dancing at 1 p.m.; and Friday, Texas Hold’em at 1 p.m. Special events are as follows: Tuesday, Breast cancer program; Wednesday, Sebring Center to Amish Country; Thursday, Boardman Fun Day; Friday, Youngstown Fun Day, and April 29, Youngstown trip to Amish Country. The center, in conjunction with AARP, will offer free tax assistance for those age 60 and older from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays and Fridays. Call for an appointment. Home Energy Assistance Program applications are available at the center. The center has applications for the SBC telephone discount program of $12.38 per month for eligible applicants.
