JFK Catholic auction brings in $175,000

WARREN — John F. Kennedy Catholic High School raised more than $175,000 in support of its educational programs at the 18th Annual “Just For Kicks” Live and Silent Benefit Auction conducted by Basinger Auction Service, Ltd.

A dinner with Bishop George V. Murry, golf with Congressman Tim Ryan and tickets to the Kelly Pavlik Middleweight Championship boxing match in Atlantic City helped to inspire the school’s most successful auction to date.

GED testing schedule at Choffin career center

YOUNGSTOWN — Official GED testing sponsored by Choffin Career and Technical Center through the Youngstown Adult Basic and Literacy Education Program will be offered at 8:45 a.m. May 5 and 6, June 2, 3, 16 and 17 and July 7, 8, 21 and 22 and at 3:45 p.m. May 12 and 13 and June 2 and 3 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Avenue.

CANFIELD — Registrations are now being accepted for fall 2008 classes at the Ursuline Preschool and Kindergarten, 4300 Shields Road. $1,000 scholarship to Penn State University

YOUNGSTOWN — The Penn State Alumni Chapter of Greater Youngstown is accepting applications from local graduating high school seniors interested in this year’s Allen Udell Memorial Scholarship program.

The Youngstown Chapter offers an annual award of $1,000 to students who show scholastic excellence and intend to enter fall semester classes at Pennsylvania State University. For more information, students should contact their high school guidance counselors, or call Tom Pauley at (330) 533-6008.

Dana Clarinet Day set at YSU to honor Fitzer

YOUNGSTOWN — The inaugural Dana Clarinet Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Saturday in Bliss Recital Hall at Youngstown State University.

This free event is designed for high school and college clarinet students, their parents and teachers and was organized in memory of Robert Fitzer who taught at YSU for more than 25 years, leaving a legacy as a passionate performer and educator. The goal is to make it an annual event.

Included on the schedule of events is a reed making workshop, an exhibit by Buffet Crampons and a recital and master class with guest artist Richard MacDowell, professor of clarinet at the University of Texas at Austin.

West Elementary raises $4,360 jumping rope

YOUNGSTOWN — This year’s Jump Rope for Heart event at West Elementary School netted $4,360 for the American Heart Association. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade took part in the weeklong event, securing pledges for jumping rope during their physical education classes. West has been involved in the program for eight years.
