Ferguson’s long ball powers Mineral Ridge to two wins


MINERAL RIDGE — Jason Ferguson hit two home runs and drove in seven runs, leading Mineral Ridge over Jackson-Milton in a high school baseball doubleheader Saturday.

Ferguson had a home run and single, and drove in four runs, as the Rams won the opener, 11-3. He hit a three-run homer and two doubles in the second game, which Mineral Ridge (8-6) won, 12-1.

Ferguson has five home runs this season.

Anthony Pannunzio (3-2) struck out 13 in a complete-game win in the opener. He also had two hits, as did Derek Gustovich.

Derek Rummell struck out five and singled twice for Jackson-Milton. Jeff Kardoh also had a pair of hits and Joe Sharisky doubled for the Bluejays.

In the nightcap, Joe Mulichak added a double and single for the Rams, while Ryan Anderson and Joe Miller both singled twice. Anderson also had three RBIs, while winning pitcher Kyle Borton (2-2) fanned seven.

Jeff Karsay had two hits for Jackson-Milton.

Poland 7, Boardman 6

POLAND — Drew Petro had a game-winning double in the bottom of the seventh for the Bulldogs (5-3).

Marc Turnbull went 3-for-3 and Ross Lopez had a single and double and two RBIs for Poland. For Boardman, Kevin McCulloh and Dan Kubala had two hits, while Dean Porter had two hits including a double.

Shane Parks and Joe Strawinski both doubled for the Spartans (7-3).

Springfield 12, McDonald 11

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Matt Semach ‘s single drove in Frank Sferra, who had doubled, with the winning run in the last of the seventh for Springfield.

Sferra also had two singles and another RBI while Dylan DeJane socked a grand slam homer to pace the Tigers (9-4).

DeJane got the mound win in relief.

For McDonald, Mike Gatta had a double, two singles and one RBI and Mike Thomas a double and single.

Crestview 13, Columbiana 11

COLUMBIANA —Brian Peppel had three hits, while Mike Cervone, Nick Wylie, Carter Hill, Greg Bing and Rankin had two apiece for Crestview.

Travis Denmeade had four of Columbiana’s 11 hits.

Southeast 5-0, Garrettsville 2-8

RAVENNA — Brent Ford had a double and two RBIs to lead Southeast (3-6) in the opener of a doubleheader. Greg Lemley and Anthony Cionci each had a double for the winners.

In the nightcap, Southeast was blanked without a hit by Garrettsville (4-8).

Canfield 6, Ursuline 3

STRUTHERS — Nate Wilson struck out five and improved to 2-0, leading the Cardinals.

Tom Cheslik had two hits for Canfield, including a triple, and three RBIs. Brett Cooper added a pair of singles, one of which drove in a run, while Matt Keating had a double and two RBIs. Kyle Vaclav also singled twice.

Mark Lapikas went 2-for-4 with a triple for Ursuline, but was tagged with the loss. Dan Baco went 3-for-3 with a double.

Mooney 8, New Castle 6

STRUTHERS — Scott Smith and Matt Durkin had two hits each for Mooney (12-1) at Cene Park.

Joe Colella and Joe Perrotta had two hits each for New Castle (5-4).

Mooney 11, Columbiana 1

STRUTHERS — Scott Smith slammed three hits and Matt Durkin had two with one RBI to lead Mooney (13-1) at Cene Park.

Lakeview 7, Badger 2

CORTLAND — Scott Palette had a double, single and one RBI and got the mound win with relief help from Josh Pryor to lead Lakeview (5-7), which handed Badger its first loss.

Palette and Pryor combined to pitch a four-hitter.

Kevin Cox had a single, hit-by-pitch and two stolen bases while Ryan Nisbett added a single, two RBIs and a walk to aid Lakeview.

John Chachko had a double and single while Jake Dunbar had a double, two RBIs and a walk to pace Badger (10-1).

Lowellville 16, Newbury 15

STRUTHERS — Senior Jim Sudon’s sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the eighth scored freshman Tony Scheldone with the game-ending run Friday night.

Bryan Rossavita started the bottom of the eight with a single; Scheldone entered as his pinch -runner. Anthony Alfrano’s bunt single and Vince Travaline’s walk preceded Sudon’s sacrifice fly.

With Lowellville down, 15-12, in the seventh inning, Tony Pope’s bases-loaded double tied the game for the Rockets (9-2).

Lowellville was in danger of being the victim of the mercy rule when it trailed, 12-2, in the bottom of the fifth. That’s when the Rockets erupted for five runs.

Pope, a senior, had five RBIs, Rossavita had three hits and Pope and Sudon delivered two RBIs apiece.

Canfield 7, Poland 1

NILES— The Cardinals (9-2, 5-0) moved into first place in the Metro Athletic Conference standings as the Bulldogs slipped to 4-1 in the game played at Eastwood Field.

Canfield sent 11 batters to the plate in the second inning. Winning pitcher Jared Turocy (3-0) hit a two-run single during five-run surge. Mark Carrocce hit a triple, two singles, stole two bases, scored once and drove in two runs. Brett Cooper hit three singles and scored twice. Tom Cheslik singled home a run and his sacrifice fly brought in another run.

Turocy, a junior, scattered four hits and struck out eight to pick up the win.

Perry 12, Salem 4

SALEM — Perry (8-2) put the game out of reach as it scored seven runs in the second inning and two in the third for a 10-3 lead. Jeff Torrence hit a pair of singles and scored three times for the winners. Dan Fortney hit two singles for the Quakers (1-6).
