CANFIELD — Women attending the Ladies Night Out at 6 p.m. May 2 at Canfield Christian Church, 123 S. Broad St., are encouraged to wear hats, because the speaker, Shirley Griffin, will use “Hats” as her theme. Those attending the event will have a chance to win a door prize or a handmade afghan.

Featured will be a dinner of chicken cordon bleu, twice baked potatoes, green beans, fruit salad, rolls, homemade pie and coffee or tea.

Junior Achievement plans bowling event

BOARDMAN — On May 3, Junior Achievement will sponsor an annual Bowl-A-Thon from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Camelot Lanes, 628 Boardman-Canfield Road, as a fundraiser.

Companies interested in participating may form five-person teams, with each bowler being responsible for collecting a minimum of $40 in pledges. Those taking part do not need to be from the same company, nor do they have to be good bowlers.

Incentive prizes will be awarded individuals raising $50, $100 and $200. The JA goal is to raise more then $45,000.

Senior citizens invited to dinner

AUSTINTOWN — The cafeteria at Austintown Fitch High School, 4560 Falcon Drive, will be the setting from 2 to 4 p.m. May 7 for a dinner to be held for Austintown senior citizens by the school and Austintown Board of Education.

The cost for the meal is $2 at the door; however, reservations are required and can be made until May 2 by calling (330) 797-3900, Ext. 1501.

Moms to be celebrated at MetroPlex event

GIRARD — On Tasc, Inc. presents Ladies Night Out: Celebrate Moms on May 8 at the Holiday Inn MetroPlex, 1640 Motor Inn Drive, Girard.

Registration and exhibits begin at 5 p.m., and dinner will be at 6. The $30 cost includes dinner.

The evening begins with displays, giveaways, a 50-50 raffle and a Chinese auction. After dinner, the highlight of the evening is a presentation by nationally known speaker and Mahoning Valley native Karen Vadino.

Vadino is a motivational speaker, humorist, trainer and consultant. She’s known for her unique and humorous approach to life. Vadino has been in the human services field for more than 20 years and has been a trainer and educator for 15 years.

All of her talks are humor-based, reflecting her own way of dealing with the stress of everyday life. She is increasingly becoming known for her “Vadinoan” theories and for teaching participants how to “release their dolphins.”

ALS fundraiser set at Progressive Field

CLEVELAND — Strike Out!, the major fundraiser of the Northern Ohio Chapter of ALS Association, has been scheduled from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 8 at the Terrace Club at Progressive Field.

The event will celebrate the lives of those who lost their battles with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a fatal illness commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and will raise awareness of the disease.

The benefit will include cocktails, dinner and a live and silent auction.

Two guests will be honored for their support of the chapter. The Iron Horse Award, named in honor of Gehrig, a famous baseball player, will be presented to Charles (Charlie) Nagy, former pitcher for the Cleveland Indians. The chapter’s Legacy Award, which recognizes an individual who has played a significant role in advancing the mission of the association, will go to Wayne Mosley, co-founder and chief financial officer of Life Equity, LLC.

Attorney to speak on estate planning

YOUNGSTOWN — Attorney Vince Wloch, of Associated Federal Abstract and Escrow Agency, will be the speaker at the 9:30 a.m. May 8 meeting of Park Vista Breakfast Club at the Gathering Room of Park Vista.

Wloch will explain how to maximize goals for the future of your estate, how to pass along the greatest amount of your estate to beneficiaries by paying the least amount of taxes, and how to avoid probate court involvement. There will be a free continental breakfast.

Mother-daughter dinner open to area women

YOUNGSTOWN — Women of the area are invited to a mother and daughter dinner at 6 p.m. May 9 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church, 420 Clearmount Drive. The meal will feature chicken divan, rice, mandarin orange salad, rolls, beverage and cake.

The speaker for the evening will be Shirley L. Griffin, whose theme will be “Pack Your Suitcase! We’re Going on a Trip: Traveling 100 Years Ago.” Music will be provided by Olivia DiMartino, a student at Canfield Middle School. Advance reservations are required .

Garden Forum offers horticulture scholarship

YOUNGSTOWN — Students who are planning to further their education in horticulture are encouraged to apply for a $500 scholarship that is being made available through the Garden Forum of the Greater Youngstown Area.

Applicants must be residents of Mahoning or surrounding counties who are planning to begin their studies in the fall or are currently enrolled in a post-secondary program. They may attend any accredited college or university in the United States.

Zumbathon scheduled at Hubbard pool

HUBBARD — The area’s first Zumbathon has been scheduled by Hubbard Community Pool as a Relay for Life event. The aerobics fundraiser will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. May 10 at Roosevelt Elementary Gymnasium, 110 Orchard Ave.

The donation is $25 for those registering through April 30 by calling (330) 534-1921, ext. 1301. Each will receive a Zumba for the Cure T-shirt. The donation at the door on the day of the event will be $40, and T-shirts will be available on a first come basis. Those collecting donations totaling more than $100 will be admitted free.
