County official seeks information on dog

LISBON — The Columbiana County dog warden is seeking information about a lost dog and reminding county residents and pet owners that abandoning a dog is a misdemeanor.

An adult, male terrier mix was found near Hanoverton, with a belt as a makeshift collar. Although the dog, named Mattie, had severe skin issues and painful fur matting, dog pound personnel determined him to have a sweet temperament and said he is highly adoptable.

With the assistance of Salem groomer Vera Reese of Pet Zone, Mattie was shaved to enable his overall physical condition to be assessed. He was found to have a large mass on his hind quarter. Mattie has been rescued by a shelter in Northeast Ohio that focuses on finding homes for medically challenged dogs.

If anyone has any information on Mattie or his owners, contact dog warden Dawn McVay at (330) 424-6333. Pet owners who contribute to abandonment or cruelty and neglect will be referred to the Humane Society of Columbiana County for investigation, McVay said.
