Anthony Lariccia to receive Ellis Island Medal of Honor

Past recipients include six U.S. presidents, Colin Powell and Walter Cronkite.

YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning Valley businessman and philanthropist Anthony Lariccia will receive the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor during a ceremony May 10 in New York City.

Established in 1986 by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations, the Ellis Island Medals of Honor are awarded annually to a group of distinguished American citizens who exemplify hard work, self-improvement, community service and distinguished service to humanity.

The presentations are made on Ellis Island, the gateway through which more than 12 million immigrants passed into America. The gala dinner in the historic Great Hall on the island follows the award ceremonies.

Lariccia joins a group of previous medal recipients that includes six U.S. presidents, Gen. Colin Powell, renowned heart surgeon Dr. Michael DeBakey, boxing legend Muhammad Ali and veteran newsman Walter Cronkite,

“Next month, we honor a distinguished group of Americans,” said NECO chairman Nasser Kazeminy. “Mr. Lariccia represents the very essence of the American way of life, having greatly contributed to our national identity while preserving the distinct values and heritage of his ancestors.”

The son of an Italian immigrant, Lariccia grew up in Struthers. After earning a degree in finance and accounting from Youngstown State University, he began as an accounting clerk for U.S. Steel before entering the financial planning and stock brokerage industry with Merrill Lynch where he joined as a trainee.

Within a few years, Lariccia was a vice president at the firm and continued to rise within the international corporation.

“I am honored to receive the Ellis Island Medal of Honor,” Lariccia said. “The award is also a tribute to my parents and my family for their spirit and hard work. They also took the American dream from just a hope and made it a reality.”

Known for his commitment to the Mahoning Valley, Lariccia has donated more than $11 million to area organizations and causes including YSU, Struthers High School, Angels for Animals and the Davis Family YMCA in Boardman.

All branches of the U.S. Armed Forces participate in the May 10 event.
