Hubbard rallies to keep TAC lead


Lakeview, Mooney and Ursuline posted lopsided victories.

HUBBARD — Bo Slemons had two hits, including the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of Thursday’s eighth inning, as the Hubbard High baseball team outlasted Champion, 3-2.

After Champion took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth, John Madeline singled and reached second on a wild pitch.

Marc Kanetsky, who had two hits, followed with a single to left that went under the outfielder’s glove, allowing Madeline to score and Kanetsky to reach second.

Matt Shelton was intentionally walked and Slemons followed with the game-winner for Hubbard (9-3, 6-0 Trumbull Athletic Conference).

Shelton (2-0) went the distance to get the win, striking out seven and walking one.

Joe Cvengros had two hits and scored a run for Champion (5-3, 4-2).

Lakeview 13, Newton Falls 0

NEWTON FALLS — Matt Metzger pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts to pick up the win.

The Bulldogs (4-6, 4-3 TAC) scored four runs in the first inning, five in the third and four in the fifth in cruising to the victory.

Ray Nisbett hit a double and single and Kevin Cox a pair of singles to spark the Bulldogs’ 12-hit attack.

Ursuline 10, Lisbon 3

STRUTHERS — Joe Wielbruda rapped three singles and drove in two runs while Paul Cene had a triple and single and Wade Daniels two singles to spark Ursuline (11-1) at Cene Park.

Starting pitcher Jake Tetec and relievers Corey Coffey and Ross Revella combined to pitch a five-hitter for the Irish.

Kyle Hiscox had two singles for Lisbon (3-7).

Mooney 20, Harding 2

WARREN — Scott Smith (4-0) pitched a five-inning win and went 4-for-4 at the plate as Mooney (11-1, 2-0 Steel Valley Conference) rolled past Warren Harding (3-12, 0-1).

Tim Marlowe, Matt Kurkin and Anthony Franceschelli all added three hits for the Cardinals, while Josh Fulmer had a triple for the Raiders.

Canfield 11, Struthers 0

CANFIELD — Andrew Zunic (2-1) pitched a two-hitter with four strikeouts and the Cardinal (8-1, 4-0 Metro Athletic Conference) scored three runs each in the first and third innings and five in the fourth.

Jared Turocy hit a double and single, scored twice, stole a base and drove in two runs. Mark Carrocce hit a double and two singles, scored twice, stole a base and drove in two runs.

Tim Cheslik hit two doubles and drove in three runs. John Manzoian hit two singles and stole two bases.

The Cardinals take on Poland in a key MAC game today at 7 p.m. at Eastwood Field.

Lowellville 13, Jackson-Milton 3

NORTH JACKSON — Mike Demetro and Tony Donofrio each had two hits and three RBIs to lead Lowellville, which scored nine runs in the second inning to take control. Jim Sudon added two hits for the Rockets (8-2, 7-1 Inter Tri-County League Tier Two).

Jeff Karash had two hits for JM (0-8, 0-5).

Mineral Ridge 6, McDonald 4

MINERAL RIDGE — Jason Ferguson’s two hits included a homer for the Rams (5-6).

Also with two hits were winning pitcher Joe Miller and Ryan Anderson. Dominic Armeni doubled.

For the Blue Devils (8-2), Mike Gatta had two hits including a double and he scored twice.

Waterloo 14, Western Reserve 13

ATWATER — Waterloo rallied for two runs in the last of the eighth inning to subdue Western Reserve (6-2).

Maverick Chick went 4-for-5 with a home run and drove in four runs to lead Western Reserve (7-1) with a homer, while Matt Kalbfell had three hits and Eric Kennehan 2-for-2 with a two-run triple.

John Gora, Tom Burton and Frank Zabotsky each had two hits for the Blue Devils.

Wednesday Wellsville 11, Jackson-Milton 10

NORTH JACKSON — Wellsville scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead for good.

Tommy Smith was 3-for-3 with two walks, Joe Sariski was 2-for-3 with a walk and Tommy Bennett was 2-for-3 with two walks for JM.
