Vallinger’s double in seventh gives Poland 4-3 win
The Bulldogs rallied from behind to defeat Howland.
POLAND — Trent Vallinger hit a bases-loaded double in the bottom of the seventh to help the Poland High baseball team rally from a two-run deficit to beat Howland 4-3 in a Metro Athletic Conference game on Wednesday.
Mark Turnbull also doubled for the Bulldogs (4-2, 3-1), who trailed 3-1 entering the seventh.
Winning pitcher Mark Carlozzi scattered five hits, while Howland’s Matt Schultz allowed only three hits.
Joe Aulizia doubled for Howland (5-4, 2-2).
Struthers 16, Hubbard 15
HUBBARD — Struthers rallied from a 10-3 first inning deficit to defeat Hubbard by scoring four times in the top of the seventh inning.
Dom Lariccia scored what turned out to be the winning run on an Eagles error in the seventh, while Mike Vitucci, Bill Noel and Palmer all had RBIs in the final frame.
Marc Kanetsky had three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored for Hubbard. Noel also drove in three runs for Struthers and had three hits including a home run.
Canfield 6, Niles 0
NILES — Sophomore Brett Cooper and juniors Dan Banna and Tom Cheslik all had two hits and an RBI for the Cardinals (7-2, 3-0 MAC).
Senior John Manzoian had a RBI double in a four-run second inning for the Cardinals.
Niles senior David Brown had three strikeouts in pitching a three-hitter.
Campbell 6, Salem 3
CAMPBELL — Nico Magnolia pitched a five-hitter and added two hits including a double as Campbell (5-2) defeated Salem.
Alex Lopez also had a triple for the Red Devils. David Wright and Brandon Holland each doubled for Salem (1-5).
Chaney 4, Warren JFK 2
YOUNGSTOWN — Ed Rovnak and Francisco Morales combined to pitch a three-hitter as Chaney (3-5) stopped Warren JFK.
Rovnak, Tyler Lillo and Dan Fanzo each had two hits for the Cowboys. Dominik LaPolla hit a double for the Eagles.
McDonald 10, Western Reserve 0
McDONALD — Sophomore Anthony Raschilla pitched a five-inning four-hitter and also had two hits at the plate for McDonald (8-1, 6-1 ITCL Tier Two).
Sophomore Mike Gatta, junior Bill Lowry and senior Anthony Fossaceca had two hits apiece for the Blue Devils, who were knocked from the unbeaten ranks by Reserve on Tuesday.
Matt Kalbfell had two hits for Western Reserve (7-1, 6-1).
Brookfield 2, Crestview 1
COLUMBIANA — Brookfield scored a pair of unearned runs in the second inning and held on to beat Crestview.
Ryan Miller picked up the win scattering seven hits, while Jake Leon started and suffered the loss for the Rebels, Corey Hill had two hits for Crestview and Nick Wylie drove the Rebels’ only run with a single in the fourth.
Newton Falls 12, Liberty 2
LIBERTY — Jan Pugh had three hits and six RBIs to lead Newton Falls (2-3, 2-3 Trumbull Athletic Conference), while Matt Novotny added two RBIs and Tyler Kernan struck out four over seven innings to pick up the mound win.
David Szakacs had a double and two RBIs and Kyle Conway doubled for Liberty (0-6, 0-4).
Southeast 6, West Branch 5
RAVENNA — Travis Smith singled home Matt Bright with the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning in the completion of a game that was suspended from Saturday.
Anthony Cianci had a home run and Greg Lemley two doubles for the Pirates (2-6). West Branch (6-2) had only four hits in the game, two by Matt Stull.
