CHICAGO — The YSU women’s golf team won the Caputo Invitational meet held at Loyola Univ.

Penguin Kathyrn Rogner carded a 152 (76-76) for medalist honors in the five-team field.

As a team, the Penguins had a team score of 648 to outdistance Loyola (660), Detroit Mercy (672), IPFW (686) and Green Bay (813).

Two phantoms up for hockey award

FRISCO, Texas — The North American Hockey League announced that Mahoning Valley Phantoms forward Derek Graham and defenseman Eric Ringel have been named as finalists for the league’s nominee for the Dave Tyler Junior Player of the Year award.

USA Hockey gives the award annually to the most outstanding American-born player in junior hockey.

Graham, 19, led the Phantoms in scoring this season and Ringel, 18, was the Phantoms’ leading scorer from the blue line.

Rankin is recognized

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Thiel College freshman Melissa Rankin was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Softball Hitter of the Week.

Rankin batted .688 (11-for-16) for the Tomcats in six games with three doubles, five runs scored.

Jones is selected

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Thiel College freshman Josh Jones (New Castle) was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Men’s Field Athlete of the Week in track.

Jones won the high jump (6-6) and was fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.36) at the Slippery Rock Invitational.

Early NFL history to be speech topic

NILES — David Fleming, senior editor of ESPN Magazine, will be here to talk about the early history of the National Football League and the 1925 championship that was won by the Pottsville (Pa.) Maroons and then stripped from them in a controversial move that remains in dispute today.

Fleming, who wrote a book about the 1925 event, will be the speaker at the April 30 dinner meeting of the Niles Historical Society at Ciminero’s Banquet Center. The event begins at 6 p.m.

Backes is recruited

HUBBARD — Hubbard High School senior Mike Backes signed a letter of intent to play Div. II baseball at Lake Erie College.

He will be a part of the pitching staff for the 2009 season.

Hermitage is champ

BOARDMAN — Hermitage defeated Youngstown 26-12 to capture the championship of the Boardman Tennis Center Davis Cup.

Heritage (5-5) took seventh place in the regular season while Youngstown (8-2) was second.

DeFrank in action

GIRARD — Alecia DeFrank (7-4) will fight Nikeva Hong (18-4) on April 26 at the Buckhalter Recreational Center in Columbus.

The 15-bout event begins at 1 p.m.

Cruse is honored

BETHANY, W. VA. — Bethany College sophomore Matt Cruse was selected as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week.

At the Slippery Rock Invitational Cruse received a provisional qualification for the NCAA National Championships in the 110 hurdles with a 14.83.

Rose going to NBA; coach gets extension

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis freshman Derrick Rose announced he was jumping to the NBA Tuesday, the same day coach John Calipari agreed in principle to a contract extension with the school.

Rose capped his spectacular first season by leading Memphis to the national championship game, where they lost to Kansas in overtime.

Terms of Calipari’s deal have not been finalized.
