Police find handgun under hood of car
YOUNGSTOWN — A loaded .40-caliber handgun was found in the engine compartment, near the battery, of a Chevrolet Caprice stopped on Boston Avenue around 9:15 p.m. Monday. Police said the driver, Paul Henderson, 24, of Sherwood Avenue, ran to a house on East Avondale Avenue.
The occupants were ordered out and a police dog located Henderson in an upstairs stairwell leading to the attic. A check revealed the gun had been reported stolen in Columbus in October 2006.
Henderson was charged with improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest and obstructing official business.
YSU bus excursion to Dunbar House in Dayton

Poll worker training scheduled in Mercer
MERCER, Pa. — A makeup poll worker training session for those who were unable to attend last week’s training has been scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday in the courthouse assembly room.

Seven charged with liquor law violations
HOWLAND — The owner of Big Daddy’s Drive Thru, an employee and five Howland teenagers have been charged with liquor offenses.
Police Chief Paul Monroe said the citations were issued Saturday night after the teens bought alcohol at the store, 1903 Niles-Cortland Road.
The five teens were in the same car at the time.
Store owner, Eric Olejnik, was cited with furnishing beer to a minor and providing liquor to a person under 21, while the clerk, Imad M. Elsayed, was cited with illegal sales of beer to a person under 21 and illegal sales of liquor to a person under 21.
Both listed an address on Duck Creek Lane, Hubbard Township.
The juveniles, who ranged from age 15 to 17, were cited as minors purchasing alcohol, Monroe said.
Trumbull County kennel will be open Saturdays
HOWLAND — The Trumbull County Dog Kennel, 7501 Anderson Ave., will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays beginning Saturday.
“We want the kennel to be more accessible and family-friendly,” said county Commissioner Daniel Polivka, adding that the Saturday hours will allow working adults and school-age children the time to visit the facility to adopt a pet.
Applications to become a kennel volunteer are available at the kennel.
Police arrest driver on gun, cocaine charges
YOUNGSTOWN — A loaded 9 mm handgun was found during a traffic stop on South Avenue at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday and the driver arrested. Police charged Matthew Johnson, 27, of Orrin Avenue, with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of cocaine, driving left of center and failure to display his driver’s license.
Police stopped the car Johnson was driving after he swerved into oncoming traffic. A search of the vehicle before it was towed revealed the gun and a bag of suspected crack cocaine inside the glove box, where Johnson had reached when officers approached the car, reports show.
Free drug-testing kits available to parents
LIBERTY — Township police are again offering free home drug-testing kits to parents who want to make sure their kids are not involved in illegal drug activity.
Detective Sgt. Toby Meloro said parents living in the township can stop by the police department between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and pick up one of the kits.
The kits test for opiates, methamphetamine, marijuana and cocaine in the body via urine.
