Farrell man dies in Hermitage traffic accident

HERMTAGE, Pa. — Police here continue their investigation into a traffic accident that claimed the life of Farrell man.

Richard Egercic, 54, of Hamilton Avenue, died at 7:11 p.m. Monday on North Hermitage Road.

Egercic was southbound in the passing lane when he suddenly veered into the curb lane, almost striking another southbound car driven by Jerry Calvert of Scott Drive in Hermitage, police said.

Egercic’s vehicle began sliding, then struck the curb along the west side of the road, police said. His car hit a large steel traffic sign post, spun 180 degrees and slid back onto the road. It glanced off Calvert’s vehicle. Calvert had swerved into the passing lane to avoid Egercic, police said. Calvert was not hurt.

Egercic suffered severe head injuries. He was taken to UPMC Farrell, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Police said witnesses reported Egercic was tailgating cars, speeding and driving poorly just before the accident, which remains under investigation.
