AMERICAN LEAGUE

White Sox 11, Tigers 0

CHICAGO — Joe Crede and Paul Konerko each hit grand slams to back Javier Vazquez’s strong start as Chicago won for the fifth time in six games over Detroit. Vazquez (2-1) won his second straight start, scattering five hits in seven innings while striking out nine without a walk. Kenny Rogers (0-3) gave up seven runs on seven hits and four walks in four-plus innings. He once again pitched with no run support; the Tigers haven’t scored a run in his three starts.

Royals 5, Twins 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Brian Bannister threw his second career complete game and outpitched Francisco Liriano, who was making his first start since 2006, to help end a three-game skid. Liriano, an All-Star as a rookie in 2006, gave up six hits, walked five and struck out four in his first major league appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery 17 months ago. The big left-hander went 42‚Ñ3 innings and gave up four runs. Bannister (3-0) gave up only three hits, walking one and striking out three. In three starts covering 21 innings, the right-hander has allowed only two earned runs for an ERA of 0.86.

Rays 6, Orioles 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Jeff Niemann allowed one run over six innings in his major league debut and B.J. Upton hit a three-run homer during a six-run fifth for the Rays. Niemann gave up six hits while striking out five. The Rays were held without a hit through four by Brian Burres, but chased the left-hander with two outs in the fifth after scoring six times for a 6-0 lead.

Blue Jays 5, Rangers 4, 10 innings

ARLINGTON, Texas — Joe Inglett drove in the tie-breaking run with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning and B.J. Ryan earned his first save in more than a year as Toronto completed a three-game sweep. Ryan was activated before the game barely 11 months after undergoing elbow ligament replacement surgery. His last save was April 11, 2007, and he had season-ending surgery less than a month later.

Angels 10, Mariners 5

SEATTLE — Jeff Mathis hit a two-run homer to lead a 16-hit attack, and Joe Saunders had another strong start to help Los Angeles avoid a series sweep. The Mariners scratched starting pitcher Erik Bedard before the game because of inflammation in his left hip. Saunders (2-0) pitched 51‚Ñ3 innings, giving up two runs on six hits with three walks and one strikeout. Right-hander Cha Seung Baek (0-1) made his first start of the season in place of Bedard, allowing seven hits and four runs in 41‚Ñ3 innings.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Padres 1, Dodgers 0

LOS ANGELES — Greg Maddux recorded his 349th career victory one day before his 42nd birthday and Paul McAnulty drove in the only run with a sacrifice fly. Maddux (2-0) threw 68 pitches over five innings in 95-degree heat, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out two. Trevor Hoffman, the all-time saves leader, pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth of the season and 528th of his career.

Nationals 5, Braves 4

WASHINGTON — Atlanta starter Tom Glavine left with an injury before recording an out and Washington ended its nine-game losing streak. Glavine (0-1) matched the shortest start of his 22-season, 303-win career, departing with a strained right hamstring after letting all four batters he faced reach base. Staked to a 5-0 lead, Washington starter Tim Redding (2-1) and five relievers did just enough to protect it and end the Nationals’ longest losing streak since the franchise moved to the nation’s capital.

Brewers 9, Mets 7

NEW YORK — Gabe Kapler homered for the second straight day, doubled twice and drove in three runs to help Milwaukee beat the Mets. Corey Hart had a career-high four hits and Rickie Weeks homered off Jorge Sosa (1-1) and scored three runs for the Brewers. Salomon Torres (2-0) worked two innings, and Eric Gagne pitched a perfect ninth for his third save in five chances. David Wright hit his 100th home run for the Mets.

Astros 5, Marlins 1

HOUSTON — Wandy Rodriguez (1-0) struck out seven and allowed five hits in seven innings, and J.R. Towles and Michael Bourn homered to lead the Astros, who’ve won two in a row. Josh Willingham hit a solo homer for the Marlins.

Cubs 6, Phillies 5, 10 innings

PHILADELPHIA — Second baseman Chase Utley’s throwing error allowed Ronny Cedeno to score the go-ahead run in the 10th inning. Kerry Wood (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings and Bob Howry finished for his first save.

Giants 7, Cardinals 4

SAN FRANCISCO — Tim Lincecum struck out 11 in six innings and rookie John Bowker homered for the second straight day and drove in four runs for the Giants. Bowker became the first player in San Francisco history to homer in his first two games. Lincecum (2-0) needed 23 pitches to get out of the first inning but settled in after that, allowing just one walk and six hits.

Rockies 13, Diamondbacks 5

PHOENIX — Clint Barmes, Matt Holliday and Garrett Atkins homered as Colorado snapped the Diamondbacks’ eight-game win streak. Barmes drove in four runs and Holliday and Atkins knocked in three apiece for the Rockies. Aaron Cook (1-1) went six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He walked three and struck out four.
