Howland girls even; Struthers, Girard boys split


STOW — Melanie Cope struck out eight in a complete game victory to lead Howland High over Richfield Revere, 4-2, in softball action Saturday.

Ashley Yassall hit a double to lead the Tigers’ offense.

STOW — The Tigers (3-4) were held to three hits.

Baseball

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Boardman (5-2) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and put the game away with a five-run fifth, as the Spartans defeated Springfield, 12-2. Chad Kovylanski hit a double and single and scored twice for Boardman. Pat O’Brien, Josh Fithian and Mike Popio each hit a double and drove in two runs. The Tigers dropped to 6-3.

East Palestine 20, Southern 0

SALINEVILLE — Nick DiCello hit a pair of doubles and drove in three runs for the Bulldogs (4-1). C.J. Sokolick, the winning pitcher, Taylor Snyder and Pat Buckley each hit a double and single.

Girard 13, Struthers 9

STRUTHERS — Brett Cubellis hit a double and single, drove in two runs and scored twice for the Indians at Cene Park. Larry Goist added two hits, including a triple, four RBIs and two runs scored for Girard. Marty Brinker hit a pair of doubles.

L.J. Schromofsky led Struthers with three hits, including a triple and a double, and two RBIs, while Billy Noel singled twice and drove in a pair of runs.

Struthers 17, Girard 2

STRUTHERS — The Wildcats (4-4) scored 12 runs in the fifth inning to end the game early. Freshman Joe Diloretto (2-0) allowed just five hits and struck out five for Struthers. Noel had three hits and three RBIs for the Wildcats, while Tyler Serich had a double and single and three runs scored, and Dom Lariccia a double and single and four RBIs.

For Girard (4-3), Brett Cubellis and Larry Goist hit doubles.
