YSU plans Women in Science workshop


The program is designed to attract young women to the fields of science and technology.

YOUNGSTOWN — Laurie Moore, an environmental engineer at Delphi Automotive Systems in Warren, will be the keynote speaker at the 11th annual Women in Science and Engineering Career Workshop on April 19 at Youngstown State University.

The free program, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., is designed to expose young women in grades six through 12 to career opportunities in science and technology.

Panel discussions will be held by area women on many different careers. Hands-on activities and demonstrations will be offered on such topics as biology, chemistry, engineering, forensics and physical therapy.

The event is open to all middle and high school girls from Mahoning and Trumbull counties and western Pennsylvania.

Pupils will attend two workshops and two demonstrations of their choice.

Parents can receive college planning and financial aid information and take campus tours while their daughters participate in the workshop.

Moore received a bachelor of engineering in Chemical Engineering from Youngstown State University and holds a master of science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.

She is responsible for regulatory compliance for Delphi’s Explosives business licensing and manufacturing activities and leads Delphi’s Dangerous Goods Transportation compliance efforts.

Delphi is a leading global supplier of mobile electronics and transportation systems.

Its Warren branch manufactures motor vehicle parts and accessories as well as transport equipment.

Moore is the STEM representative to the YSU alumni board and serves on the STEM College Dean’s Advisory Board.

Panel discussions will be in the morning and hands-on activities and lab demonstrations will be in the afternoon in Kilcawley Center at YSU.
