Abbott retired 17 of the last 18 hitters she faced after giving up two early solo home runs before a capacity-plus crowd of 1,622 at Tennessee’s new $7 million Lee Softball Stadium, known locally as “the house that Monica built.”

She was supported by solid hitting from Caitlin Lowe, who had two doubles, and Jessica Mendoza, who drove in three runs.

Speedo suit gets FINA backing

MANCHESTER, England — Speedo’s record-breaking suit has been backed twice in one week by the sport’s governing body, leaving swimmers with tough choices.

Enter the pool in Beijing in four months with a swimsuit that might lead to slower times, or break with a long-standing sponsor to go for Olympic gold in Speedo’s LZR Racer?

“I’m going to wear the Speedo at the Olympics,” South Africa captain Gerhard Zandberg told The Associated Press on Saturday at the short-course world championships. “I’m not going to sacrifice performance.”

Zandberg, who is sponsored by Arena, acknowledges he’ll be fined $4,750, but Olympic gold is worth more.

Tour of Basque

ORIO, Spain — Tour de France champion Alberto Contador won the Tour of Basque Country on Saturday after winning the sixth and final stage, an individual time-trial.

The Spaniard finished the 12-mile stage 22 seconds ahead of Cadel Evans of Australia for an overall time of 21 hours, 3 minutes, 59 seconds.

Evans was 30 seconds back overall to finish as runner-up. He was also second to Contador at last year’s Tour de France.

The 25-year-old Contador has been denied a chance to defend his Tour title after his team, Astana, was barred from cycling’s premier event following a season during which it was plagued by doping scandals.
