Youngstown native retires after 26 years in military


He received the D.I. Excellence Award for graduating with a perfect score on all academic and hands-on tasks.

YOUNGSTOWN — Army Sgt. Major Scott L. Brown, a native of Youngstown, has retired after 26 years of military service. A ceremony commemorating the event was conducted at Larkin Conference Center, Fort Lee, Va.

Brown, a son of Ed and Gwen Brown of Youngstown, entered the Army in April 1982. His duty stations included Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; Fort McClellan, Ala.; Fort Bragg, N.C.; Fort Bliss, Texas; Fort Lee; and Korea, Germany, Japan and Hawaii.

During his career, he served as acting commandant of the Quartermaster Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) Academy. His most recent position was as sergeant major for the deputy commander for training, Combined Arms Support Command. He graduated from the Army Sergeants Major Academy and has a master’s degree from the University of Management and Technology, an accredited online university.

Brown’s individual awards include the Army Overseas, Service and Noncommissioned Officers Development ribbons; National Defense Service, Army Achievement, Army Commendation and Meritorious Service medals; the Legion of Merit, and the Drill Sergeant’s and Parachute badges.

During training to be a drill instructor, he received the D.I. Excellence Award for graduating from the nine-week course with a perfect score on all academic and hands-on tasks.

Brown is married to the former Tonya Clinkscale, the daughter of Harold and Vicki Clinkscale of Youngstown. She is a 1981 graduate of The Rayen School and a 1984 graduate of the St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing. They have two sons, Terrell and Scott, and live in Chester, Va.
