Clarinet Day planned at Dana School of Music
YOUNGSTOWN — The inaugural Dana Clarinet Day will be April 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Bliss Recital Hall in Bliss Hall at Youngstown State University. This free event is designed for high school and college clarinet students, their parents and teachers and is being coordinated by Dr. Alice Wang, assistant professor of clarinet at the Dana School of Music.
Events will include a reed-making workshop, an exhibit by Buffet Crampons and a recital and master class with guest artist Richard MacDowell of the University of Texas at Austin. MacDowell has performed with several orchestras in the United States and Mexico and is frequently featured as a clinician around the country. He has also performed as a chamber musician throughout the United States and Taiwan under the auspices of the Pacific Cultural Foundation.

Play to be filmed for 2009 festival
YOUNGSTOWN — The Black Theater Festival has invited Youngstown playwright Karen Clark-Green to submit her play “Color of Love” for main stage consideration for the 2009 festival.
Larry Leon Hamlin founded the Black Theater Festival in 1989, with a goal of uniting black theater companies to ensure their survival. The six-day festival attracts more than 60,000 people. The 2009 festival will be Aug. 3-9 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
As part of the requirements, a DVD of Clark-Green’s play will be made with a live audience. This performance will be 7 p.m. April 25 at the Masonic Temple, 223 Wick Ave. The two-person musical drama starring Clark-Green and D.C. Colvin explores the stereotypical challenges that accompany an inter-racial marriage. There will be no entrance after the filming begins.
Tickets are $15 and can be reserved by mailing a check or money order to 522 Mistletoe Ave., Youngstown OH 44511.
Sponsorships are also available, starting at $50. Sponsors will receive special seating and entrance to a reception sponsored by Charles Staples Restaurant, Sparkle Market and Dairy Queen.
Piano recital at MUC
ALLIANCE—The Mount Union College department of music will present a free piano recital at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Presser Recital Hall. The works of Bach, Beethoven, Piazzolla, Mozart, Ginastera, Brahms and Shostakovich will be featured. Presser Recital Hall is in Cope Music Hall on the corner of Simpson Street and Union Avenue. SHARON, Pa. — Bennie’s Comics, 462 Sharpsville Ave., is one of thousands of comic book shops around the world that will participate in Free Comic Book Day on May 3. Now in its seventh year, Free Comic Book Day is designed to spread the art form’s popularity. Comics will be in the media that weekend for another reason: “Iron Man” opens May 2 in movie theaters nationwide. “Iron Man” is based on the Marvel Comics character.
