YCS no-hits East, Irish top Canfield
YOUNGSTOWN — Ed Gonda pitched a perfect game over five innings with 12 strikeouts, leading Youngstown Christian to a 10-0 victory over East at Pemberton-Donnell Park.
Rolando Rojas hit a triple, a double and drove in two runs for Youngstown Christian, which won for the third straight time. Ten players went to the plate in the fifth inning, scoring seven runs for the winners.
Ursuline 12, Canfield 3
STRUTHERS — Senior Joe Wielbruda went 4-for-4 with two stolen bases and four runs scored, while junior Shawn Roman, senior Mark Lapikas and senior Ross Revella added two hits apiece for the winners at Cene Park.
Lapikas (3-0) had seven strikeouts for the Irish (8-0).
Dan Banna tripled for Canfield (4-1).
Boardman 10, Lake 0
UNIONTOWN — Kevin McCullough pitched a three-hit shutout over six innings, striking out four and walking two, to lead Boardman in a Federal League game.
McCullough also went 3-for-4 and scored three runs for Boardman (4-2, 1-1), while Dan Kubala was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored, Pat O’Brien was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored and Joe Strawinski was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Michael Chack doubled for Lake (2-2, 1-1).
Fitch 1, Canton McKinley 0
AUSTINTOWN — Junior pinch-hitter Mike Hebebrand, leading off the seventh inning, singled for the Falcons (3-2, 2-0) in the Federal League game. Anthony Savko sacrificed Hebebrand to second and he scored on a single by Nick Wiery.
Senior Jim Kinnick, who will attend YSU next fall, pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts to pick up the win. Losing pitch Mike Palmer of the Bulldogs (0-2) allowed five hits and he struck out eight.
Mooney 12, Mohawk 5
MOHAWK, Pa. — The Cardinals, behind 5-4, rallied for three runs in the fifth inning and five in the sixth to prevail. Colin Hart and Draw Fitzpatrick each hit a double for Mooney.
Howland 12, Niles 2
NILES —Matt Preston went 3-for-3 with a homer, a double, two runs and three RBIs to lead Howland (4-2), which had 17 hits. Vince Villio also had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in three runs. Joe Aulizia had two hits and scored three runs. Adam Shrodek got the mound win and had two hits, two runs and two RBIs.
Anthony Capogreco had two hits for Niles (1-4).
The game did not count in the conference standings.
McDonald 12, South Range 9
McDONALD — Down 9-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, McDonald rebounded, starting with back-to-back home runs by Mike Gatta and his brother, Nick.
Mike Gatta, a sophomore, had a two-run home run, while Nick, a senior, had a solo homer.
Nick Gatta and Anthony Fossaceca had three hits apiece, while Bill Rees had two hits for McDonald (7-0, 5-0 ITCL Tier Two).
Chris Gause’s three-run homer put South Range ahead, 4-3, in the fifth before the Raiders added five runs in the sixth.
Also for South Range, Steve Bensinger had three hits, while Vince Miller and Don DeChellis had two hits apiece.
Mineral Ridge 14, Bristol 4
MINERAL RIDGE — Senior Jason Ferguson started the bottom of the fifth with a double and scored from second base on a passed ball with no outs to end the game due to the 10-run rule.
Ferguson, Ryan Anderson, Joe Miller, Dominic Armeni, Evan Walton and Robert Cameron all had two hits for the Rams (1-5).
Joe Mulichak had a two-run triple for the winners and one of Armeni’s hits was a double.
Armeni and Cameron both knocked in two runs.
Walton’s six-hitter included seven strikeouts and no walks.
Steven Seydler doubled for Bristol (0-3).
Western Reserve 18, Wellsville 6
WELLSVILLE — Bob Banks allowed four hits over six innings, striking out seven, to lead Reserve. Banks also had three RBIs, while Maverick Chick doubled and homered for the Blue Devils (5-0, 4-0 ITCL Tier Two). Josh Sudano and Eric Kennehan added two hits apiece.
Hubbard 11, Liberty 0
HUBBARD — The Eagles (7-0, 4-0) took advantage of six walks, two hit batters and doubles by Corey Hitt, Matt Shelton, Mike Carnahan and Dan Helsel and a triple by Bo Flemons to produce the 11 runs. Frank Palestro worked the six innings and struck out six to pick up the win.
The Eagles are tied for first place in the Trumbull Athletic Conference standings with Champion and they will travel there next Thursday.
Windham 7, Maplewood 4
MECCA — Windham, aided by three Maplewood errors in the first inning, got a 5-0 start in a game in which both teams had six hits.
Kyle Cooper had two singles and was the winning pitcher for Windham (2-2).
Senior Marty Urchek had two singles and junior Mike Finch had a solo home run in the fifth for Maplewood (1-4), which stranded 11 baserunners.
Poland 8, Struthers 4
STRUTHERS — Trent Vallinger was the winning pitcher and went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs in a game at Cene Park Wednesday.
Dave Koval added two hits, two runs and two RBIs for the Bulldogs (3-3, 1-0 Metro Athletic Conference), and Ross Lopez hit an inside the park home run.
L.J. Schromofsky was 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Struthers (3-3, 0-2), and Bill Noel added a double and RBI.
