warped ticket auction

The Vans Warped Tour is auctioning VIP tickets — complete with onstage seats — to benefit leukemia, cancer and AIDS research. The 14th annual music and extreme sports festival will partner with the T.J. Martell Foundation to auction off a pair of tickets to each concert on the 46-city tour, it was announced Tuesday.

The highest bidders score stage-access passes to see their favorite bands up close. Angels & Airwaves, Cobra Starship and Gym Class Heroes are among the performers on the tour, which kicks off June 20 in Pomona, Calif., and winds down Aug. 17 in Los Angeles. The auction begins April 21 on eBay. All proceeds will benefit research at the Mayo Clinic, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, among other institutions.

The T.J. Martell Foundation has raised more than $40,000 from the Warped Tour ticket auction in the past four years.

‘design squad’ at carnegie

The popular PBS teen engineering reality show “Design Squad” comes to life Saturday and Sunday at Carnegie Science Center’s Design Squad Weekend in Pittsburgh, two days of engineering challenges. Visitors will have their engineering skills tested like no previous Science Center event as they try to build a bridge from newspaper, construct a rubber-band-powered paddle boat, design a machine to launch ping-pong balls into the air and more, all based on design challenges from the television show that airs Sundays at 7 p.m. on WQED-TV.

On Saturday, visitors can catch a special preview of the first episode of the second season of Design Squad in the Science Stage at noon and 3:30 pm. At 2 p.m. in the Works Theater, visitors can meet show cast members Krishana and Deysi for autographs.

myers to host mtv movie awards

Party on, Mike Myers. The star of the “Wayne’s World,” “Austin Powers” and “Shrek” films will host the 2008 MTV Movie Awards. The 17th annual show will air live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, Calif., on June 1. The celeb-filled event is the network’s irreverent nod to the typical awards shows.

Categories for Golden Popcorn trophies include best kiss, best villain and best comedic performance. Nominees will be announced in May.

Myers, star of the upcoming film “The Love Guru,” previously hosted the show in 1997.

not so pc

Twenty years ago, the only way you could play “John Madden Football” was on a computer. How times have changed: For the first time in years, you won’t be able to play next season’s edition of “Madden NFL” on a PC.

Peter Moore, president of “Madden” publisher EA Sports, said, “The PC presents some very serious business challenges to us in the sports category, particularly because so many of you all are playing your favorite sports games on the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii.” Moore said. “We do have ideas for how to revitalize the PC for sports games.”

song of the week

Kelly Rowland’s “Ms. Kelly” (Columbia) didn’t quite catch on last year, so she’s trying again. The re-release features the sweet little single “Daylight” that sounds like a mix of ‘70s soul and Mary J. Blige’s recent upbeat R B dance hits, giving Rowland a chance to shine. Throw in some clever verses from Gym Class Heroes’ Travis McCoy about Paris Hilton’s jail sentence and Rowland should have a winner this time.
