Sewer line likely ready in mid-June

The price for the sewer line project is $4 million.

NEW SPRINGFIELD — The Petersburg sewer line is expected to be completed and residents able to hook up to it by mid-June, Springfield Township Trustee Robert Orr said.

Orr said all the sewer lines are laid, and two pump stations will be delivered next week. After that, he said, only wiring remains to be done.

He said an engineer for Dave Sugar Construction, general contractor for the $4 million project, is walking the sewer line to determine what needs to be done to restore properties to their pre-construction condition.

The line runs from the intersection of state Routes 170 and 626 to a sewage treatment plant on Unity Road. It was needed because aging septic tanks had caused contamination in the area.

Trustees also announced the annual township cleanup is set from 9 a.m. to noon April 26. Residents may bring items and dump them free that day at the Waste Management landfill, 3510 Garfield Road, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Freon, tires, batteries, oil, televisions and computer items will not be accepted.

Orr asked that township groups and organizations call the township offices at (330) 542-2377 if they would like to volunteer for roadside cleanup efforts that also will take place that day.

Trustees also awarded the annual road-paving contract to R.T. Vernal Paving, North Lima. Vernal was the lowest of four bidders, offering to do work on Sena and Kerry Lane for $33,920. Other bids ranged up to $40,810.

Trustees at their meeting earlier this week also authorized Road Superintendent Richard Kennedy to advertise for bids for a 2009 F450 pickup truck with a cabin chassis and to draw up specifications for a salt bin. Orr said the current salt bin is not big enough and overflow could contaminate a nearby storm sewer.

Police Chief Matthew Mohn said he is accepting applications for auxiliary police officers. Anyone interested should contact the police department.

Interim fire Chief Matt Gebhardt raised concerns about volunteer firefighters’ staying at fire stations until early morning and said some items are missing from one firefighter’s gear.

Trustees did not act on Gebhardt’s request to impose a curfew on the fire stations and instead asked him to require firefighters to log in and out of fire stations. They said they want “horsing around” and playing of video games stopped at the stations.
