On the Side

CHARLIE’S LIST: U.S. Rep. Charlie Wilson of St. Clairsville, D-6th, recently sent an e-mail to some of his constituents, including those in Mahoning and Columbiana counties, asking them to “answer this quick one-question survey.” By doing so, constituents are automatically added to Wilson’s list of those receiving his e-newsletter.

The question was: “How much longer are you willing to have large numbers of troops in Iraq?” The choices were: “less than a year,” “1-2 years,” “2-5 years,” and “more than 5 years.”

Strangely, “immediately” and “about 100 years,” probably two of the most likely answers, aren’t on the list.

It seems this was designed to get people signed up for the congressman’s e-newsletter more than anything else.

Wilson has consistently supports a withdrawal of the troops so it’s doubtful an unscientific online survey of his constituents would change his mind.

Democratic gathering: The Democrats of the 17th and 6th Districts, a local political group, will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Poland Community Baseball Association hall on Sheridan Road. The guest speaker is Phil Moore, director of the Mahoning County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
