Pedestrians killed in Youngstown, Howland
In the Howland case, the vehicle continued north on Route 46 without stopping.
Pedestrians were killed by vehicles in both Youngstown and Howland Township on Tuesday.
Charges are pending against the driver of a Pontiac that pinned a 39-year-old pedestrian against East Side Civics and killed her, an accident investigator said.
Detective Sgt. Patricia Garcar identified the victim as Helen Mrosko of East Boston Avenue.
Garcar said Mrosko, who worked at Belleria Pizza in Cornersburg, had just gotten off a bus on South Avenue and was walking on the sidewalk toward a tavern to meet her boyfriend Tuesday afternoon when the accident took place.
A 2003 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Brandy Robinson, 18, of Willis Avenue, was traveling east on East Philadelphia Avenue and failed to stop for the stop sign at South Avenue, Garcar said. The Pontiac then struck a 2001 Dodge Neon traveling north on South Avenue before pinning Mrosko against the bar/restaurant building at 2929 South Ave.
The Dodge was driven by Yaschica Shipman, 29, of West Boulevard, Boardman.
Garcar said once her investigation is complete, she will present her findings to City Prosecutor Jay Macejko and charges will be filed, likely next week, against Robinson. Robinson received her driver’s license in December 2007, the investigator said.
Neither driver applied brakes, Garcar said.
“It was a freak accident to be on the sidewalk at the time of the accident. She wouldn’t have seen it coming because no brakes were squealing,” Garcar said. She doesn’t suspect drugs or alcohol were involved.
Mahoning County Coroner David M. Kennedy has ruled the death an accident.
In Howland Township, meanwhile, the Warren post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a late evening crash that killed Ann Delvecchio, 53, of Warwick Road, Howland.
According to the police report, Delvecchio was crossing state Route 46 near Old Orchard Road at 10:10 p.m. Tuesday when she was struck by a northbound vehicle. That vehicle continued north on Route 46 without stopping.
Patrol Sgt. Randy Skaggs said investigators believe Delvecchio was coming from a nearby McDonalds’ restaurant, trying to get to her home. She was pronounced dead upon arrival at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital, he said.
Those witnessing the accident described the car as a small or midsized silver vehicle. Police have determined the car to be a silver Pontiac G6 and said the car should have heavy front end damage.
Police are asking that anyone with any information contact the Ohio State Highway Patrol at (330) 898-2311. Tips from the public have been coming in.
“We have some people giving us information, and witnesses have come forward with information,” said Skaggs.
