Men’s golf takes 4th

FAIRBORN — The YSU men’s golf team competed in the eight-team Norm Bullock Collegiate at Greene Country Club and carded a three-round total of 888 (294-300-294) good for fourth place.

Four Penguins placed in the top 20, led by junior Ryan Stocke who placed in sixth with a three-round total of 218 (69-76-73).

Freshman Spenser Solzner finished seventh place carding a 220 (71-75-74) while finishing in 17th shooting a 224 (78-73-73) was senior Ross Beal. Sophomore Tim Morrow had a 226 (76-76-74) to place 20th.

Merrill sets mark

YOUNGSTOWN — YSU’s Aaron Merrill (Leetonia) broke his own school record and hit the NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the shot put over the weekend at the Pepsi Florida Relays.

Merrill threw the shot 55 feet, 2.75 inches to finish second among collegiate competitors and third overall.

Merrill holds the Horizon League’s top shot put distance.

Trumbull volleyball

YOUNGSTOWN — The Trumbull Volleyball Club Grey 16s team won two Junior Olympic tournaments.

At Youngstown St. the team defeated Varsity Elite in the final 25-11, 25-22.

At Crestview High the team defeated Spirit Falcons in the final 26-24, 28-26.

Team members are Courtney Angelo (Hubbard), Marcy Angelo (Hubbard), Emily Gahagan (Southeast), Brittany Woodard (Southeast), Lexi Starheim (Hubbard), McKenzie Patterson (Girard), Emily Woods (Hickory), Kelsey Husnick (Brookfield) and Elaina Bettura (Canfield) .

Girls hockey

BOARDMAN — The Mahoning Valley Lady Blue Jackets hockey team won the inaugural girls developmental division of the Laurel Tournament, defeating the Geauga Lady Maple Leafs 3-0.

Beth Zumbach, Darby Hepola and Andrea Ryhal scored goals while Megan Betty had an assist and Jessica Driscoll and Madison Quetot were in goal for the shutout.

The tournament featured 44 teams from six states.

Other team members are Kara Klem, Sarah Snyder, Danielle Thomas, Amanda Moss, Kelsie Stutz and Alexis Stutz.

Boylan selected

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Thiel College junior leftfielder Eric Boylan was named this week’s Presidents’ Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week by the conference office.

Boylan led the Tomcats to a 4-2 week, including a 3-1 mark against PAC squads, by hitting .489 (15-for-31) with one home run, two doubles, six runs scored, 12 RBI and a stolen base.

Coley is named

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Thiel College junior Dorran Coley was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Track Field Athlete of the Week by the conference office.

Coley registered a winning time of 14.62 in the 110-meter high hurdles at Saturday’s Marv Fry Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan Univ., provisionally qualifying him for the Div. III national meet.

Curling in brief

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — France edged the United States 6-5 Tuesday at the World Men’s Curling Championship, handing the Americans their second loss of the day.

The U.S. team fell to Australia 6-4 earlier Tuesday. The loss to France dropped the U.S. record to 3-4 in round-robin play. Each team plays 11 round-robin games, with the championship game Sunday. In other games Tuesday, undefeated Canada beat Norway 9-8.

Cycling results

ERANDIO, Spain — Kim Kirchen of Luxembourg won the second stage and Alberto Contador kept the overall lead of the Tour of Basque Country race on Tuesday.

Kirchen won the 95-mile stage in 3 hours, 40 minutes, 42 seconds. He edged Palo Bettini of Italy and David Herreri of Spain, who finished in the same time.
