Struthers edges Chaney; Fitch triumphs


The ITCL’s McDonald and Leetonia remain unbeaten.

STRUTHERS — Gary Yemma struck out nine batters and walked one Tuesday to lead the Struthers High baseball team to a 3-2 victory over Chaney.

Billy Noel and Steve Wilaj drove in runs for the Wildcats (3-2) in the game at Cene Park.

For the Cowboys, pitcher Ed Rovnak struck out five batters and walked two. He also drove in a run.

Howland 7, Warren JFK 3

WARREN —In a game in which only nine hits were registered, Howland took a 5-0 lead en route to victory.

Sophomore Matt Preston had two hits including a double, junior Jared Kirin had two hits and senior Jonathan Brady had a triple for the Tigers (2-2).

Winning pitcher Andy Zigmont had three strikeouts while reliever Matt Schultz whiffed two.

Eric Gelsomino, Corey Diles and Elliott Killen each had a single for JFK (0-2).

Losing pitcher Matt Joseph struck out three while Killen had one strikeout.

Salem 11, East Liverpool 0

EAST LIVERPOOL — Bobby Spaulding and Mike King combined to toss a three-hitter for the Quakers.

Derek Ball’s two hits included a double and drove in four runs. Also with two hits were Zac O’Brien and Jim Armeni.

Fitch 14, Canton McKinley 0

CANTON — Senior Steve Gruver gave up one hit over four innings. He struck out nine and walked four.

Senior Mike Olenych allowed one hit and struck out two and sophomore Chris Miller whiffed one in the seventh.

Junior Jason Bagoly had a home run and two singles for three RBIs. Senior Nick Wiery had a triple and two singles for an RBI.

Senior Jim Kinnick had a double and single and senior Andrew Warren had two singles for the Falcons (2-1, Federal 1-0).

United 5, Mineral Ridge 3

MINERAL RIDGE — Brock Horstman and McCavitt Carter each singled home a run in the top of the eighth inning to lead United.

Jake Snyder struck out nine in getting the mound win. Carter had two hits and drove in two runs for the Eagles (4-1, 3-1 Inter Tri-County League Tier One).

Joe Mulichak and Derek Gustovich each had two hits for the Rams (0-5, 0-4).

Lisbon 6, East Palestine 2

LISBON — Russell McCullough hit a two-run single in the fourth inning to lead Lisbon (2-3-1). Lucas Rambo had two hits and struck out seven over seven innings to get the mound win. Matt Wilson also had two hits.

McDonald 5, Sebring 1

SEBRING — Winning pitcher Anthony Raschilla (2-0) struck out nine and walked two for the Blue Devils (5-0, 4-0 ITCL Tier Two).

Raschilla also had three hits including a double and drove in one run.

Nick Gatta, Alex Baker and Bill Lowry each had two hits, with Baker driving in two runs. Anthony Fossacecca doubled.

Brad Mitzel doubled for the Trojans (1-5, 1-3).

Western Reserve 18, Jackson-Milton 5

NORTH JACKSON — Western Reserve scored 11 runs through the first three innings in cruising to victory in the ITCL2.

Matt Kolbsell and Chris Kolbsell each hit three singles and scored three times for the Blue Devils.

Derek Rummell and Tommy Smith hit a pair of singles apiece for the Bluejays (0-5).

Leetonia 12, Wellsville 11

LEETONIA — The unbeaten Bears (5-0, 4-0 ITCL2), behind 11-8, rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for the victory.

With two outs, Pat Russell of the Bears hit a two run single to tie the score and Andrew Ryan singled home the winning run.

In the top of the seventh inning, Wellsville had runners on first and third and nobody out when relief pitcher Ryan Guszecki (3-0) came on for the Bears and struck out the side to end it.

Gruszecki hit three singles, drove in two runs and scored twice. Steve Coven led the Tigers (1-4, 0-4) with a double, two singles and three RBIs.

Lowellville 12, Southern 0

SALINEVILLE — Junior Drew Skelley had a two-hitter, which included eight strikeouts and no walks for the Rockets.

Lowellville’s top hitters were Cody Vocature and Anthony Alfano, both with two hits.

Anthony Donofrio doubled for the winners (3-2, 3-1 ITCL2).

Hubbard 12, LaBrae 3

LEAVITTSBURG —Marc Kanetsky had three hits and Corey Hitt added two doubles and three RBIs to lead Hubbard in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.

Dan Helsel also doubled twice for the Eagles (5-0, 2-0).

LaBrae is 1-2, 1-1.

Lakeview 10, Liberty 2

LIBERTY — Sam Jenkins went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored for Lakeview (2-2, 2-1 TAC).

Nick Massacci went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Adam Lindsey had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run. Scott Palette pitched five scoreless innings for the win.

Mark Stanovak struck out nine in six innings but got the loss for Liberty (0-1, 0-1). He also had two hits offensively.

Girard 11, Newton Falls 6

STRUTHERS — Cory Stevens picked up the win in relief of Indians starter Eric Archer. Stevens (1-0) struck out four and walked one.

Chris Weibel tripled and doubled to drive in four runs for the Indians (2-4, 2-2 TAC).

Anthony Guerrieri hit a two-run homer. Stevens’ two hits included a double. Also with two hits were Larry Goist and Aaron Jennings.

For the Tigers, Jae Leeworthy had three hits.

Conneaut 4, Maplewood 2

CORTLAND — Jim Joslin’s two-run homer in the seventh inning provided the win for Conneaut (2-1).

Marty Yurcyk had two hits for the Rockets (1-2). Josh Hall went the distance on the mound for Maplewood, striking out four and walking two.

Youngstown Christian 4, Heartland Christian 4

YOUNGSTOWN — Nathaniel Setnick’s single in the bottom of the 11th inning brought home the winning run.

Setnick (1-0) relieved starter John Pecchia in the sixth inning to earn the win. Pecchia three hits for the Eagles (2-0).

Heartland Christian is 0-1.

Ravenna 9, Southeast 5

RAVENNA — A five-run fourth inning was the difference for the Ravens (2-1). Andy Hartman hit a double and single to pace the Pirates (1-2).

Late Monday Lowellville 11, Southern 1

STRUTHERS — Winning pitcher Cody Vocature (1-0) struck out nine batters and walked three for the Rockets (2-2, 2-1 ITCL2) at Cene Park.

Jim Sudon’s three hits included a RBI triple. Also with a three-bagger was Tony Pope.

Youngstown Christian 3, Canton Heritage 1

CANTON — John Peechia had three hits and scored twice for the Eagles (1-0) at Thurman Munson Stadium.

Winning pitcher Eddie Gonda struck out 12 batters and walked two. Dominic Echevestre doubled.

Canton Heritage is 1-2.

Lakeview 10, Brookfield 0

CORTLAND — Adam Lindsey’s three-run homer and Ryan Nisbett triple led the Bulldogs (1-2, 1-1 TAC). Lindsey had four RBIs and Nisbett three.

Kevin Monti’s two hits included a double. Sam Jenkins also ahd two hits.

Winning pitcher Mark Metzger tossed a five-inning one-hitter, striking out seven.

Nick Black’s double was the lone hit for the Warriors.
