Goshen police charge ex-Poland teacher

Boardman police arrested Troy Massey on a warrant from Goshen police.

SEBRING — A former Poland Seminary High School teacher who resigned late last year amid an investigation into his relationship with a former student is in trouble with Goshen police.

Boardman police arrested Troy Massey, 41, of Lockwood Boulevard, at his home Monday on a warrant issued by Goshen accusing him of failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer, a felony. The former teacher also was cited with reckless operation and improper lane usage.

He appeared Tuesday in Mahoning County Area Court here, where the judge set a $5,000 bond on the felony charge.

Goshen Chief James Willock said that an officer on patrol early Sunday saw a vehicle travel off the side of state Route 165 near Washingtonville Road and nearly strike a mailbox. The officer said he tried to stop the car by activating his cruiser lights, but the driver, later identified as Massey, failed to comply, traveling along state Route 46, Western Reserve Road, back to Route 165, New Buffalo Road, back to Western Reserve and onto Tippecanoe Road in Boardman.

Massey is accused of traveling at more than 80 mph.

“It was basically all through Green and Beaver townships,” the chief said.

Boardman police, who were stopped at an intersection in that township, shone a spotlight into the vehicle and confirmed that Massey, to whom the car is registered, was also the driver.

Goshen police called off the pursuit because of safety concerns, and warrants were issued, Willock said.

Massey could not be reached to comment.

Massey, a 19-year teacher, resigned from Poland in November. He had been a physics teacher and a cross country and track coach.

A report submitted Tuesday by the school district to the Ohio Department of Education’s Office of Professional Conduct said Massey “resigned because of or in the course of an investigation regarding an act unbecoming the profession ...”

The report said the school district had been investigating allegations from a parent of a 2007 graduate concerning Massey and that student.
