YSU’s Vukovic is named Horizon’s top pitcher
Three Penguin throwers qualified for the regional meet.
INDIANAPOLIS — Youngstown State sophomore Corey Vukovic was named Horizon League pitcher of the week Monday for baseball.
Vukovic (McDonald) did not allow a run in 91‚Ñ3 innings and led YSU to a 6-0 victory over Valparaiso Saturday. He is 1-1 this season and his ERA of 3.42 is fifth-best in the Horizon League.
Against Valparaiso Vukovic threw seven scoreless innings, scattered six hits, did not issue a walk and struck out a career-high seven. He pitched into the eighth inning and did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the fourth inning.
Earlier in the week he came out of the bullpen against Duquesne, working 21‚Ñ3 innings in the Penguins’ 14-inning victory.
The Penguins play a doubleheader at Toledo today, starting at noon, then play host to Akron Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Eastwood Field.

YOUNGSTOWN — Throwers Bethany Anderson, Aaron Merrill and Joe Lahmon all surpassed automatic qualifying marks for the NCAA Mideast Regional in Youngstown State’s first weekend of the outdoor season.
Anderson and Lahmon both hit the regional standards in the hammer, while Merrill qualified in the shot put. Anderson and Merrill both improved on their own school records while Lahmon posted a personal-best distance.
Anderson posted a mark of 190 feet, 5 inches, in the hammer to finish fifth at the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla.
Merrill placed second among college competitors and third overall at the Relays with his distance of 55-23‚Ñ4. Lahmon finished fourth with his mark of 185-8 in his first attached meet since the 2007 outdoor season.
Other top-10 finishes in Florida included Jerrill Hall’s fifth-place mark in the high jump (6-23‚Ñ4), Alisha Anthony’s sixth-place leap in the long jump (18-71‚Ñ4), John Pallini’s 10th-place finish in the shot put (49-11‚Ñ2) and Jeremiah Folger’s runner-up finish in the “B” section of the shot put (48-83‚Ñ4).
Also in Florida, Hall moved into third place on YSU’s record list in the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 15.22 seconds, and R.D. Goodright (1:53.16) and Harold Jones (1:53.62) now rank fourth and sixth in the 800. Hall also ranks fifth in the high jump, Pallini is fifth all-time in the shot put and Folger is ninth.
Anthony’s long jump distance ranks her second in school history, Carpin and Wilson rank third and fourth in the pole vault, Danielle Curry ranks eighth in the shot put (42-21‚Ñ4) and Breanne Romeo ranks ninth in the 400 (57.73),
At the Jack Hazen Open at Malone College, Kari Kreutzfeld won the 400 (57.52) and finished fourth in the 200 (25.99) while Darcelle Formby was third in both the 100 (12.70) and 200 (25.88). Lauren Blase added a runner-up finish in the 5,000 (18:54.66).
Three Penguins finished in the top 10 in the pole vault as Stephanie Jarvis was fourth (9-61‚Ñ4), Amanda Carpin was seventh (9-01‚Ñ4) and Darla Wilson tied for eighth (8-61‚Ñ4). Dom DeFilippo was fifth in the hammer (150-1).
