Police probe fatal shooting

AUSTINTOWN — Police are investigating a weekend shooting that left a 22-year-old Youngstown man dead.

Police were called about 10 p.m. Friday to the 4600 block of Burkey Road on a report of an accidental shooting.

When an officer arrived, he found the homeowner, 49, with blood covering his hands, in a hallway of the home. The homeowner pointed down the hall where police found Randy Davis of Oneta Street, lying on his back with a handgun about a foot away. Davis had a gunshot wound to his forehead, a police report said.

Lt. Robert Schaeffer said the investigation is in its preliminary stages, and police are talking with the Mahoning County coroner’s and prosecutor’s offices.

No charges have been filed.

The homeowner told police Davis had asked him if he had any military weapons in the house and, if so, if he could see them. He said he was in the hallway of the home by his bedroom when he handed the gun to Davis without checking to see if it was loaded.

“I just handed it to the victim, and it went off,” the homeowner told police, according to a report. He said he had turned away when he heard the gun fire.
