Canfield topples Salem, Campbell pulls past Niles


Springfield’s Todd Kibby struck out 13 in a one-hitter against Columbiana.

SALEM — Andrew Zunic allowed two hits and struck out six batters in the six innings he worked Monday to lead the Canfield High baseball team past Salem, 5-1.

Dave Brown drove in two runs with his two hits for the Cardinals (3-0, 1-0 Metro Athletic Conference).

For Salem (0-1), David Wright homered and doubled.

Campbell 6, Niles 4

CAMPBELL — Dan Sacui had a triple and a double to lead the Red Devils (2-0, 1-0 MAC).

Raul Pizarro doubled, pitched the complete game for his first decision and struck out nine for Campbell.

Also, Josh Gore, George Fasline and Nico Magnolia doubled for Campbell.

Nick Harper doubled for Niles (0-2, 0-1).

Mooney 11, Fitch 5

STRUTHERS — Tim Marlowe, Scott Smith and Bobby Herberger each had two hits to lead Mooney, which used a six-run fifth inning to pull away.

Danny Eich got the win in relief for the Cardinals (4-1), who overcame five errors.

Nick Weiry and Ricky Segesto each had three hits for the Falcons (3-1).

Springfield 3, Columbiana 0

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Todd Kibby (2-0) struck out 13 and walked four, tossing a one-hit shutout for Springfield.

Dylan DeJane was 2-for-3 and Kibby added a double and an RBI for the Tigers (4-2, 3-0 ITCL Tier One).

Tyler Dejong struck out three and walked two over six innings, giving up six hits for Columbiana.

Crestview 8, South Range 0

NORTH LIMA — Corey Hill struck out 10 and walked just one in tossing a three-hit shutout for the Rebels. Brian Bechtel and Jacob Leon each had a double and an RBI for Crestview.

South Range is 0-2.

Hubbard 2, Girard 1

HUBBARD — Sophomore Bo Slemons doubled home Corey Hitt in the bottom of the seventh to win the game for Hubbard (4-0, 1-0 TAC).

Hitt led off the inning with a double.

After relieving Matt Shelton with two outs and Marty Brinker on second base in the top of the seventh, the right-handed Slemons faced a 1-1 tie, but worked his way out of the threat for the win.

Hitt, a senior, finished with two doubles.

Brinker knotted the game, 1-1, with a double and the senior finished with three of six hits for Girard (1-4, 1-2).

United 5, Mineral Ridge 3

HANOVERTON — Jason Ferguson’s two hits included a solo home run. Ferguson had two RBIs for the Rams (0-4, 0-3 Inter Tri-County League Tier One).

Joseph Miller also had two hits.

East Palestine 13, Lisbon 2

EAST PALESTINE — Tommy Powers tripled and doubled for the Bulldogs (3-0, 3-0 ITCL1).

D.J. Murphy’s two hits drove in three runs while Taylor Snyder and Bryan Soldo each had two hits.

Winning pitcher Nick Baiamonte gave up five hits, struck out four and walked two.

For the Blue Devils, Dana Rose homered and drove in two runs.

Western Reserve 13, Jackson-Milton 3

WESTERN RESERVE —John Gora had three hits and three RBIs and Nick Timko struck out nine in the ITCL game. Gabe Gaudet also drove in three runs, while Matt Kalbfell, Jake Barker and Bob Banks knocked in a two runs apiece for Reserve (3-0, 2-0). Also for the winners, Chris Kalbfell tripled.

Jackson-Milton is 0-4, 0-2.

McDonald 6, Sebring 3

MCDONALD — Winning pitcher Nick Gatta (2-0) struck out six batters and walked two. He also drove in two runs.

Alex Baker’s two hits included a double for the Blue Devils (4-0, 3-0 ITCL2). Anthony Raschilla hit a two-run homer while Devin Weekly drove in two runs.

Sebring is 1-4, 1-2.

Leetonia 18, Wellsville 0

WELLSVILLE — Senior Ryan Gruszecki had 12 strikeouts against 15 hitters en route to a five-inning three-hitter.

Senior Alex Perkins had two home runs and finished with four hits, six RBIs and four runs scored for Leetonia (4-0, 3-0 ITCL Tier Two).

Also for the Bears, Pat Russell, a senior, had two hits, including a three-run homer and scored three times and junior Josh Selway had a double.

Todd LaClair had a single and double for Wellsville (1-3, 0-3).
