Two males hospitalized after Saturday shooting on East Side
The hospital is not releasing the conditions of the victims.
YOUNGSTOWN — A teenager and a 20-year-old man were injured in an East Side shooting Saturday night.
Information on the conditions of the two gunshot victims was unavailable Sunday night from St. Elizabeth Health Center, as they are on the “do not report” list, the hospital said.
The victims, Edwin Vargas, 16, of the 200 block of Bruce Street, and Carlos Rodriguez, 20, of the 500 block of Bruce Street, were taken to St. Elizabeth’s after a shooting at 6:08 p.m. Saturday in the 200 block of South Jackson Street.
A police report detailed at least three calls about shots fired near Lincoln Park and people running through one caller’s yard.
The report noted that the driver of the vehicle with Rodriguez and Vargas was returning to the South Jackson address when its occupants saw three people, ranging in age from 15 to 18, standing in the street.
As the vehicle approached the driveway, the occupants in the car saw one of the suspects with a gun who began shooting at the car, the report said. In the driveway were a woman and her two young children, who were playing in the garage. They were uninjured.
After the car pulled into the driveway, Vargas got out, saying he was shot, and Rodriguez went into the residence. Witnesses took Vargas to St. Elizabeth’s; he may have been shot in the face and arm. Rodriguez was transported by ambulance. Rodriguez told police the suspects looked familiar but he didn’t know them.
Police found shell casings in the vicinity of the South Jackson address. The occupants of the car were unarmed; Vargas did have a bag of .44-caliber Magnum bullets, which he said he found on the street and pocketed.
The crime remains under investigation.
